Its a good lens. Fairly heavy and for the first 6 months its worked quite well.
Until Just a couple of weeks ago it has started locking up. I am not able to focus or zoom in or out. Its as if the insides of it has broken. I dont feel confident to use Sigma now in the future. Which is now why I will not purchase another sigma lens again. It is cheep, but you get what you pay for.

This has now become my main lens for my canon 50d. It has fantastic build quality and feels solid. I would not change it for the world BUT I do have 2 little issues that I must mention. I think these problems are a reflection of budget and I would not expect to see them on a L series lens, but then I would not expect to pay the associated price tag either!
Firstly there is some zoom-creep when the lens is angled steeply up or down. I personally do not take many photos in this way and tend to prefer either horizontal or gentle angles below or above a subject. I am not sure if this is a problem experienced by ALL users of the 24-70mm lens; if it is not then hopefully a good Sigma service may sort the issue.
Secondly mine is not quite pin-sharp at 2.8 so I tend to stop down a bit to great some truly lovely results. But again using a lens at mostly 4+ raises the question of buying such a fast lens in the first place!
I have had to list these two niggles with the lens as I think they are worth considering as a consumer. However I still really like this lens and would not hesitate in buying another Sigma in the future(probably 70-200 2.8). Well until my budget can stretch to the L series glass anyway!

This lens reports itself as being f2.8 across all focal lengths but in reality its really not. Fully open at 2.8 my images have often suffered from terrible vignetting, really not at all subtle but really quite drastic darkening covering most of the image with huge great black corners.
Also the lens barrel on mine (maybe not others?) falls forwards, rolling from 70mm to 24mm whenever the camera is facing downwards with the lens barrel at the ground. This surely shouldn't happen! It should have enough grip to hold its focal length! I have a feeling that this issue has worsened since using.
Also I got some dirt particles inside the elements of mine within the first month of use. I've tried to keep it as clean as possible although have been on a fairly hectic 5 week trip with the camera and lens always together in a camera bag. There are quite big gaps between the barrel elements so its easy to see how this could happen.
Its a real shame as the lens looks at first sight to be really quite good quality. Its big, heavy and aesthetically very pleasing but upon finer inspection mine fails to meet the grade. Sure its a lot cheaper than any canon lens but its not actually that cheap an item so annoyed its not better.

I recently bought this lens for my Canon 5D as a walk around lens and for using on my upcoming trip to Africa. I would have liked to have gone for the L series canon made lens but I couldn't really afford it so I opted for this one instead. On a test shoot I was very surprised with the image quality especially on close up shots and the sharpness is pretty good as long as your shooting about f8 or higher which with the iso quality in the 5D isn't a problem for me.
The auto focus is a bit slow especially focusing from one extreme to the other and I have to say the lens hood provided is pretty useless and in bright light gives no protection from lens flare so be prepared to make one yourself out of bog roll if bright lights are your chosen subject.
I love the matt black finish and also the weight which in my opinion gives more stability when shooting but thats just my personal preference.
All in all pretty damn good considering you would be paying over £600 for an L series of the same focal length.

I have owned this lense since 2006, originaly it purchased it to replace the 18-55 that came with my 350D. The 350D has been replaced with a 7D now. I find the Sigma lens to be of very good build and image quality. I use this lense for about 90% of my photograpy form landscapes , close ups using extension tubes to snapshots. I have used it in climates from Arizona deserts in high Summer +40C to minus 23C Idaho mountain Winters and anything the British weather can throw at it.I found the auto focus stops working at around -10C and after -15C it give up the game all togeather but was still OK after it has thawed out. This is a robust lense as it still works despite it not having an easy "pampered" life. The only niggle I have is the satin black coating on the lens body gets dirty/dusty and is hard to clean.
I Have use this lens with a ring flash after I got a 82 -77 MM stepdown ring and still get good results. Overall I am very happy with it as it has served me well. Focus could be a little quicker and it gets confused by close up twigs and grass when taking landscape shots. If/when it stops working I will replace it with another Sigma 24-70 F2.8 I can offer no higher praise than that.

I bought this because I love shallow dof for some shots and my canon 50mmm was a bit too long for indoor shots on my 40d. I don't like buying non Canon lenses but this was well reviewed so I gave it a go and I'm happy that I did.

Bought this from Amazon recently, was really impressed with the quality of the build on the lens, real solid hefty piece of kit yet small enough for me to carry around!
Was testing this out on my new Canon 550D, the video recording on it was absolutely amazing! Crisp quality! Would definitely recommend this to anyone!
The f/1.4 was a real joy to play with and i was thoroughly satisfied with it, the sharpness of my pictures and the background blur was a nice touch which added more emphasis to the subject in focus.
Until i took a couple more shots, and realised the focus appeared to be slightly to be off.
Prior to purchasing this lens, i'd read about the lens having alot of front/back focusing issues, so i wasn't too surprised, but was abit disappointed.
Didn't realise until i tried focusing on certain points, taking picture and upon closer inspection of the image, i'd find that the point of where i intended to focused on, was off by quite a margin. Although slightly disheartened, i am not going to give up trying to find the 'perfect' working model of this lens.
A word of advice, though not guaranteed - check the serial number on your lens/box. Supposedly later batches of the item was less likely to have problems.
A word of recommendation, get the B + W 62mm UV Filter with Multi-Resistant Coating, cheap solution to protect your lens and give you a nicer picture!

This is a superb lens, and the 30mm (48mm equivalent)focal length is perfect for portraits in low light, where flash would be intrusive. The only problem, as other reviewers have stated is in respect of Auto Focus (AF) in poor light/full aperture shots, but this is inevitable. Overall the build quality and performance are superb, and I recommend the lens without hesitation.

I own a Canon 40D with the following lenses Canon EFS 17-85mm USM IS, Canon 50mm MK 2 and Sigma 10-20mm EX DG. The majority of pictures are taken with the Canon 50mm which I bought very cheaply 2 years ago. I do a lot of portraiture shots and the canon 50mm works pretty well for the most part especially for head shots. However for full length body shots you need to be standing a fair way back. I saw a gap in my lense collection. I thought if i had a slightly wider angle prime lens then I could take more interesteing full length portraits so I decided to buy a the Sigma 30mm to fill this gap.
I have only had it for the weekend but have already taken a couple of hundred shots and I'm incredibly impressed by the results. The colours are vived and the sharpness of the pictures are better than any of the other lenses I have. Sigma include the a lens hood when purchasing the lens. Why don't Canon do the same ?? Instead they charge upto £30 for a bit of plastic - be sure to factor this into the price when considering a lens. Don't be fooled by third party lens hoods that may not fit your lens correctly.
The build quality has a sturdy feel and the focus ring is well positioned with a nice grip for manual focussing. Moreover The hypesonic motor ensures auto focussing is fast so you don't miss the important shots.
In summary this is an excellent lens but it obviously costs over 3 times as much as the canon 50mm however you can see results in pictures. If you have the money it's worth the investment for the pro-sumer who doesn't necessarily want to fork out for a Canon L series Lens.

I got the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens to use an an 'everyday' lens to go with my new 550D. This is an excellent lens for the money (I paid £270 for it). After mainly using a Canon 50mm f/1.8 (which is an excellent lens for £60!) on my 400D for the last couple of years but commonly feeling the need for a slightly wider angle, I really wanted another fast prime lens, and I read a lot of good things about the Sigma - all of which have so far shown true. Compared to the Canon 50mm f/1.8, the Sigma 30mm is much, much more solid lens and 'feels' like a better product. The sharpness is spot on (i'm sure some Canon L lenses are way better, but who really looks at photos zoomed in at 100% anyway) and the f/1.4 has come in very handy. I was unsure whether to get this lens or something like the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 for it's zoom range - but I'm glad I got this little Sigma prime. I imagine it'll be on my camera 90% of the time and so far it's focusing and build quality have blown me away. The weight of the 550D + Sigma 30mm makes for a good solid SLR camera to carry around all day.
I use it on the 550D, and for those who are interested - it works just as well as a lens for shooting video. The manual focus ring is large, comfy and easy to turn which makes shooting even a moving subject with a shallow depth-of-field easy.
All in all I can't recommend this lens enough. If you're looking for a lens to leave on your camera 90% of the time this is definitely a good option. Sure you don't get the zoom range of the canon's kit lens but 30mm on a crop body is a very good compromise for most peoples shooting styles. I promise you won't miss that zoom, and the f/1.4, fast quiet focusing and excellent manual focus make up for any zoom envy you might get.

Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC Macro Digital Zoom Lens For Canon Mount
For about 6 months I used a Canon 17-40mm f/4 L series lens and decided I wanted a faster lens. The 17-40L is fantastic; all I needed for most outdoor shots, very wide and of course usable on full frame/35mm Canon SLRs. However, it was f/4 and I wanted an f/2.8 like my telephoto lenses to allow me to use it in churches/houses with less need for higher ISOs and flash.
My options were the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 L II, which is very very expensive, but of similar build quality to my 17-40L. I couldn't justify the ridiculous price tag, especially seeing as I was using a cropped sensor camera. My other considerations were the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, which I found too plasticy, though very similar in shape/external design and the Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 which I opted against.
The Sigma 18-50 is very good; coming with a lens case, lens hood and both caps needed, all I needed to buy extra was a UV filter. It has been given the EX finish label, which I sort of disagree with even though it is fairly heavy and well built it is not anywhere near as well built as my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 which is also an EX lens. Anyway here's a list of pro's and con's to weigh up:
Pros
- Constant f/2.8 aperture: This is very useful indoors and to an extent for shallow DOF work
- Close focusing distance allowing for 1:3 macro focusing (useful for flower photographs and close up portraits)
- Smooth zoom and focusing rings
- Fast auto-focus
- Fairly decent build quality, certainly better than the Canon kit lenses and the Tamron 17-50mm lens.
- Non-rotating front element (good for filters)
- Zoom lock: good to stop the lens from creeping in zoom
- Accurate auto-focus, good keeper rate
- Very nice lens cap - the new Sigma lens caps are easy to remove with the hood on
Cons
- Lens extends while zooming becoming largest at 50mm
- Noisy autofocus compared to HSM (or USM)
- Not upto most Sigma EX lenses build quality, this could be because its not a DG lens
- No focusing window, although I rarely use that on other lenses to be honest.
Verdict:
This lens is very good. After having it for a few months I've gotten used to it and took some good photos with it. Its auto-focus is very accurate and I find that important in a lens today. I recommend it for anyone with a 1.6x crop sensor: 350D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 1000D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D

I've had this lens for a short while now and have taken it out on a few trips. Essentially this represents a faster version of the standard kit lens that I got with my 20D, so it's a reasonable general purpose lens for day-to-day use.
I found that it took a bit of getting used to this lens to finesse the focus and get sharpness into my photos. It can be a bit soft wide open, but normally I have no complaints.
Essentially paying this sort of price for a constant 2.8 lens with some Macro functionality you can't really complain. Construction has a solid feel to it and, as usual, Sigma supply you with a hood and, indeed a lens carry case as part of the deal.

I bought this lens from the auction site about 6 months ago.
The one thing this lens made me realise was how poor the kit lens that came with my Canon EOS 300D actually was. And I had never had any complaints about that lens whilst using it.
The results from this lens are razor sharp and the colours are superior. The difference in results from upgrading to this lens where what I was expecting from upgrading to a new camera.
Beware though, it is very heavy and seems prone to ugly green lens flare when taking shots with the sun in view (even with the hood) but other than that I can't recommend it enough. I am now saving for the Sigma 10-20mm rather than the EOS 40D because I've realised its best to invest in glassware.

This is a very good value for money lens , for less than half the price of the canon equivalent this lens performs as well ( and some argue than performs even better ).
It weights nearly half a kilo but is well balanced and feels strong in the camera. The EX DC range of sigma is similar to the L IS in canon for more image sharpness.
This is a lens that ,along with a good telephoto 80-200 ,will complete most amateur photographers kit.
I take 80 % of my pictures with this lens, is great for portraits ,landscape and interior shots.

This lens is just brilliant. The clarity of the produced images is superb.
It can sometimes be difficult when using it hand-held, but once you figure out the settings, you will be producing excellent results.
I found that setting my 450D to fully automatic often produced images with very shallow depth of field, so now I use Ap priorty and set the aperture to around F8 ro F10.
The macro capabilities are far better than I had hoped, and this lens should be a part of any photographers kit.

i am just an amateur, but i am highly delighted with the sigma. first of all i checked out the nikon 105mm as i believe you get what you pay for, but the extra cost just for vr didnt add up, also in macro vr doesnt help that much. so use a tripod or take more shots and pick the best one. anyway as for the lens its briliant with crystal clear images and deffinately worth the money

I bought this macro lens as I wanted to do some basic macro photography using a full-size sensor.. Firstly I can definitely recommend that 100mm focal length is ideal for starting at macro - 50mm is just too wide (probably more use for portraits) and 150mm is just too expensive.
This Sigma lens is solidly built and certainly doesn't feel plastic at all - it's part of the EX range which are the top tier of Sigma lenses (easy to spot by having a gold ring at the end of the lens). Focussing is sharp and as a keen amateur I certainly can't see any shortcomings in this lens in terms of quality (f2.8 is certainly wide enough for me as even at that aperture I can throw the sharpness on macro shots very easily - I actually found I was using f4 most the time as the sharpness was falling off too quickly so focus has to be spot on)
There are a few things I don't really like about this lens though. The auto-focus is quite slow (especially when compared to the USM Canon equivalent, albeit quite a bit more expensive), and the collar which is used to select auto or manual focus is quite clumsy and just doesn't feel right. That said for most pure macro work you're best off using the manual mode and once in that setting the control is pretty good.
My other complaint is that if you put a UV filter on you can't put the cap on - this is because the cap fits the inside of the front of the lens in a slightly different way to most lenses... easily rectified with either not using the UV filter (which is fine since the front of the glass is set a long way back from the front of the lens so is difficult to damage) or buying a suitable cap (prob £10).

I have been a user of prime lenses for a while; with Canon 200 and 300mm primes which have taken many great photos. I have found that lugging around so much glass in my pack quite tiring and decided to switch to a zoom lens to reduce my load. Wanting a fast piece of glass to complement a 24-70 the 70-200mm range is the obvious choice; as fixed aperture through the zoom is; in my opinion, the only way to take photos. The Sigma 70-200mm compromises on little compared to its canon competitors; it is well made; the lens itself takes excellent photos when paired with my 7D. I have taken a few dozen images so far and found them sharp and flare free even when taken at obscene angles relative to the sun.
The flexibility of the lens compared to those i use is its greatest benefit ; and more importantly compared to my canon L lenses i don't believe I am losing any image quality.
Only 4 stars because my Canon 1.4 extender wont mate with this lens which will incur some extra expense in the not to distant future.

Origanally I was going to get the Canon 70-200 f2.8 but then I saw this little guy. Build quality is great and so is the picture quality. I was going to knock a star off for it not having any image stabilization but then it does have a fantastic minimum focas point of only 1 metre which in my eyes seals the deal. Also it comes complete with the tripod adapter ring and hood which I believe are extras on the Canon. Ok perhaps the Canon lenses have better optics, and look a bit more up market but they cost twice as much. So basically what a bargin........

great lens at an amazing price (compared to close to double for the canon 'L' equivilent) sharp as a tack, solid build, great range and very fast.
my one complaint is the sigma coating they use on all of their lenses which gets dirty quickly and i awful to clean.

Nikon and Canon users are spoilt for choice when it comes to the range of lenses they can choose from. As a Pentax shooter the choice is a lot less. This Sigma lens give me the sort of quality I was after at what I consider to be a reasonable cost.
Performance of any lens at the extremes of the range will never be as good as in the middle but I have found images captured through this lens far superior to any kit lens and it gives Pentax a very good run for the money. f2.8 is a useful tool to have even if you don't use it all the time.
Build quality is good and solid and the focus is very quiet.

I should say I have returned this product, unused, as a result of - after I thought I'd done my research - reading two further reviews (not on Amazon, but on photo sites) that suggested variable quality and perfomance from this Sigma lens. In fairness, as far as I could tell, the construction and condition of this product was A1; delivery/service was fine; it's just that the two reviews I subsequently read made me wonder if this was really a trade up from the existing Nikkor 70-210 f4 lens I had or whether if I needed wider aperture I should save up for the Nikkor f2.8 which has blinding reviews. I suggest if considering this lens you review all the options first, including whether you need f2.8, what's available s/hand, and I'm afraid I probably did not. Plus there's an underlying feeling that you pay for what you get - there is a reason Nikkor lens attract a premium; but be warned it's a hefty one.

This lens is just brilliant. The clarity of the produced images is superb.
It can sometimes be difficult when using it hand-held, but once you figure out the settings, you will be producing excellent results.
I found that setting my 450D to fully automatic often produced images with very shallow depth of field, so now I use Ap priorty and set the aperture to around F8 ro F10.
The macro capabilities are far better than I had hoped, and this lens should be a part of any photographers kit.

i am just an amateur, but i am highly delighted with the sigma. first of all i checked out the nikon 105mm as i believe you get what you pay for, but the extra cost just for vr didnt add up, also in macro vr doesnt help that much. so use a tripod or take more shots and pick the best one. anyway as for the lens its briliant with crystal clear images and deffinately worth the money

I bought this macro lens as I wanted to do some basic macro photography using a full-size sensor.. Firstly I can definitely recommend that 100mm focal length is ideal for starting at macro - 50mm is just too wide (probably more use for portraits) and 150mm is just too expensive.
This Sigma lens is solidly built and certainly doesn't feel plastic at all - it's part of the EX range which are the top tier of Sigma lenses (easy to spot by having a gold ring at the end of the lens). Focussing is sharp and as a keen amateur I certainly can't see any shortcomings in this lens in terms of quality (f2.8 is certainly wide enough for me as even at that aperture I can throw the sharpness on macro shots very easily - I actually found I was using f4 most the time as the sharpness was falling off too quickly so focus has to be spot on)
There are a few things I don't really like about this lens though. The auto-focus is quite slow (especially when compared to the USM Canon equivalent, albeit quite a bit more expensive), and the collar which is used to select auto or manual focus is quite clumsy and just doesn't feel right. That said for most pure macro work you're best off using the manual mode and once in that setting the control is pretty good.
My other complaint is that if you put a UV filter on you can't put the cap on - this is because the cap fits the inside of the front of the lens in a slightly different way to most lenses... easily rectified with either not using the UV filter (which is fine since the front of the glass is set a long way back from the front of the lens so is difficult to damage) or buying a suitable cap (prob £10).

I thought for years i could get away without a decent wide angle lens, i realise after getting this that i couldn't.
I've read many reviews about this lens that complain about lack of sharpness around the corners at wider angles (10-15mm), but after a few dozen test shots with it, i can't see much loss of details at all.
Other reviewers of Sigma have also mentioned issues with build quality, but again it's all good here. This lens is solid! The supplied petal hood is a nice snug fit and the lens is nice and heavy, which helps greatly with getting a good steady shot, even at 1/30th sec with no tripod.
This lens is also almost silent when focusing thanks to it's hyper sonic motor (HSM).
I currently have the lens attached to my Nikon D200, which seems to be a match made in heaven, as the camera is now so well balanced, BUT VERY HEAVY!
One niggle many people have is that this lens is pretty much useless indoors without a flash, so if that's your thing, you should save up some extra pennies and get the constant f3.5 version.
If you've got the money, get this lens.

I got this lens yesterday, after reading all the great reviews and believe me, it really does live up to them! The super wide angle effect is simply breath taking and the build/quality of the lens is fantastic! Well worth every penny, great quality and soooo much fun to use!

I was always a little dubious about buying non-canon lens' as I had read they had inferior glass etc. but that simply isn't true in this case. This is an amazing lens which gives outstanding results and at 10 - 20mm it's very hard to match when it comes to the angle. It is slightly limited on aperture size at f4-5.6 so taking shots in low light is almost certainly a tripod job unless you have a very steady hand. However, considering the purpose of a wide angle lens I didn't feel that this was a significant down-fall neither is the lack of image-stabiliser. The HSM focusing (equivalent to Canon's USM) is quick, quiet and accurate, although in very low light it does occasionally struggle to lock on, but I have had the same behaviour with my notably more expensive Canon lens' too. Plus it comes with a decent lens hood which is more than the Canon equivalent does. I would obviously recommend getting a UV filter, but you may also want to consider a circular-polariser too.
