This spotting scope is well finished and easy to use. It is not possible to use the included carrying case with a tripod quick release foot attached, so an alternative has to be purchased separately. At lower magnifications the scope gives very bright images and is usable up to 40x in most light conditions. Above 40x the brightness drops off markedly, making 60x very difficult to use except in the brightest of conditions. The zoom adjustment is a little jerky - this will probably ease with use and does not cause a problem in the field. Eye relief is very good and spectacle wearers will have no problems at any magnification. Overall, and considering the price level, this scope is to be recommended, especially the ED version.

I write this review as I bought this item slightly by accident (I wanted the VR version, and accidentally purchased this version). Nonetheless, I received this, and have been very happy with the quality, and do not regret not getting the VR version. It is a very high quality item, and more than suits my needs for family photo's, and have seen no issues with the lense at all.

This lens is really rather nice to use. The build quality is superior to my Nikon 18-135mm kit lens. The image stabilisation is fantastic since sharp pictures can be obtained at 1/20 sec which reduces the need to increase the ISO setting.
Calumet are to be congratulated with the speed of packing and posting this lens. It was with me the day after placing the order.

This is an absolutely wonderful lens: autofocus is very fast and accurate and it is the sharpest lens I have used so far. The 35mm equivalent focus range of 100-400mm makes it an excellent long lens for wildlife photography and it is so sharp that every detail is clear. It is quite heavy as one would expect, but much lighter than the Sigma lenses (also sharp, of course) covering the same focal lengths on my other cameras. Unfortunately, exchange rates are much more adverse than they were when this lens first appeared, so it is now more expensive - but if it is a possibility, buy it and you will enjoy it. I am still very much a beginner at digital photography: I'm sure there will be much more to praise about this lens as I become more expert, but, for now, it's super!

I bought this lens with a D700 last November along with a Hoya Pro1 77mm UV. Most importantly, the optical performance wide open at all focal lengths is excellent with very low levels of chromatic aberrations. I can fit a Hoya HD circular polariser onto the UV without vignetting. Flare is also low, helped partly by the somewhat large & deep bayonet hood.
The build quality is first rate but the zoom ring does stiffen slightly around 35mm. I can confirm that the sealing is good as this lens & camera got covered in snow last January. Being a G series lens, there is no aperture ring, reducing the compatibility with older Nikon bodies.
If this lens had image stabilisation, it would have 5 stars. This is not a small or light lens being quite a bit longer & heavier than Canon's 24-105mm f4 but is better optically. The balance on my D700 isn't bad but would probably be better on a D3 or D700 with the additional battery pack. I wouldn't expect Nikon to replace this lens with a VR model anytime soon.

A simple and short review, as you'll find everyone singing the praises of this lens on the web.
I bought it because I wanted the best for my D700 and I've not regretted my purchase for a second. I'm not a sports or wildlife photographer, so I've no real need for a long lens. Therefore, this baby at 24-70mm suits me down to the ground.
The only other lens I have is the 50mm f1.4 for situations when light availability is extremely limited. Other than those times, this lives on my camera.
Yes it's heavy, but you want it to be. Yes, it's expensive but it's still good value.
If you ahve a full frame Nikon camera then only lack of finance should be a reason not to buy this. Even then, how much do you really love your grandmother?
In a nutshell: Buy it.

Excellent standard zoom lens, produces first class results on all focal distances.
My only groan is that it's very heavy; a tripod or monopod is recommended, pity this lens does not have VR.
If you're looking for walk about general use lens, the Nikon DX 16-85mm vr would be a good choice.

Only four stars you ask? Why?
This is a fantastic lens, and I bought one willingly for use on a D300, with the intention as so many do of moving on to FX when Nikon announces a suitable D700 upgrade or replacement. Its a good range for FX, and a good short telephoto range for DX, and with many of my photographs being in the (FX) 50 - 100mm range the 36-105 coverage on DX is about right for me. Initial results were astonishing, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this lens optically and performance-wise. The '3D' effect that many talk of is there, and some of the portraits shot with this lens are unreal in their quality.
The problem is simple. This lens, for an amateur (even an advanced one like me who has had some work published and been paid for it) is that it is just too heavy for regular, amateur use. Like many, much of my photography time is based around life-events, such as children, holidays, trips etc, and this is NOT the lens to tote on the front of a big camera for occasions such as these. My son (who at 1 is just getting to be really aware) was almost petrified of this lens when it is fully complete with hood etc. It is very, very imposing, big, and heavy. For pro use, or for wedding photographers etc, this is a perfect, built like a tank, choice. After all, a bad back is just an occupational hazard!
So, it comes down to choice. I returned this lens, and purchased instead an older Af-D 24-85 f2.8/4 instead, which so far has been fantastic. The older design of the 24/85 should not put any FX user, or potential user off, and once again, the coverage of 36 - 127 suits me on DX. Optically it is not in the same league (it is half the price) but for 90% of what I'll use it for it is fine, sharp, and fast enough. I also have in my arsenal a 50 1.4 G-AFS (Awesome, and not far off the 24-70 for portrait characteristics) and an older 85 1.8 D, again a great portrait/low-light lens. I don't therefore think I'll miss the 24-70.
I really wish Nikon could somehow magically produce the same stellar optical performance in a smaller package than the 24-70, or alternatively build a consumer/semi-pro grade version with a lighter weight/build quality for non daily users. I'd certainly queue up for that.
So, 4 stars is really unfair of me on a superb product, it would get 5 stars if it were two inches shorter and 300 grammes lighter.

Caveat emptor - an optically great lens (well, above average anyway) but there is clearly a build quality issue with the 24-70mm zoom ring which frequently either arrives with or develops a 'grinding' noise in the range 24-35mm. Reports over Nikon's willingness to rectify this problem vary. Check user forums on the web before considering purchase. I had mine 18 months before the fault developed and I'm not the only one to suffer.

I'm really impressed. This lens is great for portraits, macro photography (shallow depth of field is really cool), sports or nature photography. After reading other reviews my concern was that the lens was going to be heavy and slow. It's not. It's not heavy as for such huge lens at all. It's also not slow, autofocus works pretty fine (except for the 150mm+), but manual focus is working ok too. I really love that lens and I truly recommend it to all photography enthusiasts. The price is very reasonable too. Buy it and enjoy it!

Being a 4/3 lens the range of effectively 600mm is great for zoos, sports etc
Limited aperture means its not an action stopping lens but is easy to carry.
Good entry into wildlife photography before spending eye-watering amounts on a wider aperture or 'pro' version!
Was very pleased that it has a 'manual focus' switch - auto focus at long focal length is not easy on my E510.

Got this to go with my E-510, as I was beginning to feel a tad limited by the kit lenses that came with it, fine as those are. It is not a light lens in use - an SLR gorillapod will wilt under its weight unless carefully set up - but the results that I have enjoyed with it have been spectacular. In macro mode, I have been able to capture skittish butterflies with fine resolution, and hazy distant landscapes become a breeze! The resolution of distant objects has been solid, and cropped in closeup portraits have proved that the lens can handle these more than capably. Craters on the moon are clearly discernable, and playing with the camera settings (yes, well over a year since buying the camera, and I am still discovering the things it can do!) shooting hand-held in low light has proved easy enough in most situations.
The joy of the 4:3 system is that this lens covers such a staggering range (140mm - 600mm equivalent) in a compact body. The downside is that I am now starting to drool over the thought of getting a wide angle lens to complement it!
I am tending to use it for wildlife and flower photography, and for foreshortening landscapes. Before buying it I wondered if I could justify the cost, but you only live once and I am very pleased with the purchase. Having got it, I would not now part with it, and that's a sign of a good product in my book.

This relatively lightweight lens is top-notch in delivering high quality images with little-to-know distortion throughout its 70-300mm (really 140-600mm) focal lenths when taking outdoor shots. Indoors, images are also sharp but autofocusing is somewhat slow in low light conditions. However, as another reviewer mentioned, this limitation can be mostly overcome by setting the camera to manual and auto focus. I'd highly recommend this versatile, leightweight lens when you are looking to add a long-range zoom lens to your photo equipment.

Maybe I'm just not that good a photographer but I'm not altogether sure about this lens. I bought one a day or two back for an Olympus e-600 camera and I found it heavy and slow. Don't get me wrong I'm no David Bailey but there is an obvious weight issue when it is attached to a small camera like the e-600.
The thing I've found is that when I'm lining up a shot, I like to check, double check and re-double check it to make sure I'm not doing anything too daft with the shot. I've found that because the lens is comparatively heavy, it keeps wanting my "weight baring" hand to drop a little as I line the shot up. This might be a problem for anyone who likes to use a dSLR as a hand held camera.
The other thing that surprises me is that lack of promptness when it comes to focussing. The 14-42 and 40-150 are noticeably quicker. I know that the 70-300mm is much bigger and that I should expect it to take longer, but even alowing for that it feels a little slow when the light isn't good.
All this having been said, the resulting pictures do seem genuinely sharp, which is always a good thing.
