"Excellent optical quality on FX but hardly compact" 2010-07-11 By Mr. P. A. Busby (SE UK) I bought this lens with a D700 last November along with a Hoya Pro1 77mm UV. Most importantly, the optical performance wide open at all focal lengths is excellent with very low levels of chromatic aberrations. I can fit a Hoya HD circular polariser onto the UV without vignetting. Flare is also low, helped partly by the somewhat large & deep bayonet hood.
The build quality is first rate but the zoom ring does stiffen slightly around 35mm. I can confirm that the sealing is good as this lens & camera got covered in snow last January. Being a G series lens, there is no aperture ring, reducing the compatibility with older Nikon bodies.
If this lens had image stabilisation, it would have 5 stars. This is not a small or light lens being quite a bit longer & heavier than Canon's 24-105mm f4 but is better optically. The balance on my D700 isn't bad but would probably be better on a D3 or D700 with the additional battery pack. I wouldn't expect Nikon to replace this lens with a VR model anytime soon.
"If you only buy one lens for your Nikon FX body, buy this one." 2010-06-09 By Mr. S. P. Olive A simple and short review, as you'll find everyone singing the praises of this lens on the web.
I bought it because I wanted the best for my D700 and I've not regretted my purchase for a second. I'm not a sports or wildlife photographer, so I've no real need for a long lens. Therefore, this baby at 24-70mm suits me down to the ground.
The only other lens I have is the 50mm f1.4 for situations when light availability is extremely limited. Other than those times, this lives on my camera.
Yes it's heavy, but you want it to be. Yes, it's expensive but it's still good value.
If you ahve a full frame Nikon camera then only lack of finance should be a reason not to buy this. Even then, how much do you really love your grandmother?
In a nutshell: Buy it.
"nikon 24-70mm f2.8 lens" 2010-05-26 By Brian Dennison (uk) Excellent standard zoom lens, produces first class results on all focal distances.
My only groan is that it's very heavy; a tripod or monopod is recommended, pity this lens does not have VR.
If you're looking for walk about general use lens, the Nikon DX 16-85mm vr would be a good choice.

"Gorgeous Lens...... But......" 2010-04-19 By Happy Snapper (Cambridge, UK) Only four stars you ask? Why?
This is a fantastic lens, and I bought one willingly for use on a D300, with the intention as so many do of moving on to FX when Nikon announces a suitable D700 upgrade or replacement. Its a good range for FX, and a good short telephoto range for DX, and with many of my photographs being in the (FX) 50 - 100mm range the 36-105 coverage on DX is about right for me. Initial results were astonishing, and I can wholeheartedly recommend this lens optically and performance-wise. The '3D' effect that many talk of is there, and some of the portraits shot with this lens are unreal in their quality.
The problem is simple. This lens, for an amateur (even an advanced one like me who has had some work published and been paid for it) is that it is just too heavy for regular, amateur use. Like many, much of my photography time is based around life-events, such as children, holidays, trips etc, and this is NOT the lens to tote on the front of a big camera for occasions such as these. My son (who at 1 is just getting to be really aware) was almost petrified of this lens when it is fully complete with hood etc. It is very, very imposing, big, and heavy. For pro use, or for wedding photographers etc, this is a perfect, built like a tank, choice. After all, a bad back is just an occupational hazard!
So, it comes down to choice. I returned this lens, and purchased instead an older Af-D 24-85 f2.8/4 instead, which so far has been fantastic. The older design of the 24/85 should not put any FX user, or potential user off, and once again, the coverage of 36 - 127 suits me on DX. Optically it is not in the same league (it is half the price) but for 90% of what I'll use it for it is fine, sharp, and fast enough. I also have in my arsenal a 50 1.4 G-AFS (Awesome, and not far off the 24-70 for portrait characteristics) and an older 85 1.8 D, again a great portrait/low-light lens. I don't therefore think I'll miss the 24-70.
I really wish Nikon could somehow magically produce the same stellar optical performance in a smaller package than the 24-70, or alternatively build a consumer/semi-pro grade version with a lighter weight/build quality for non daily users. I'd certainly queue up for that.
So, 4 stars is really unfair of me on a superb product, it would get 5 stars if it were two inches shorter and 300 grammes lighter.
"Zoom Ring fault" 2010-04-05 By D. Burns Caveat emptor - an optically great lens (well, above average anyway) but there is clearly a build quality issue with the 24-70mm zoom ring which frequently either arrives with or develops a 'grinding' noise in the range 24-35mm. Reports over Nikon's willingness to rectify this problem vary. Check user forums on the web before considering purchase. I had mine 18 months before the fault developed and I'm not the only one to suffer.

"Very Disappointed" 2010-03-18 By Jawboax (Scotland) Have been using this with Nikon D90. The lens seems to have trouble focusing. For indoor photos without the flash, only around 1 in 20 turn out ok. The rest are blurred and/or grainy. The lens is much better for outdoor daylight shots or indoor using the flash but still no better than my £80 small zoom lens.
update 8.6.10-This lens has consistently let me down from the start. Most recent photos in daylight were terrible. I have altered my rating accordingly.
"Superb lens, an absolute must for the camera bag" 2010-01-20 By The D Man (Surrey) I bought this lens to upgrade from the 1.8 AF D. I wondered if there would be much difference, but I wasn't left wondering for long. This is an amazing lens, the DOF at 1.4 is superb as you'd expect, but at f/4 it's as sharp as you could want to see in a lens. The possibilities with this on your body are endless, it truly is an amazing piece of glass and well worth the money.
"Spot-on" 2010-01-08 By Peter H (UK) I bought this in my local camera shop, just before Christmas when these were hard to come by. It's not my first prime lens (since I've been taking photographs regularly for over 25 years) but it is my first "fast" one. When I researched it, comments seemed rather mixed, but I eventually decided to get it anyway. I'm using it with an FX-sensor body and can now confirm that it is SUPERB. Used carefully, wide open, it gives wonderful pictures with a razor-thin depth of field. Slightly stopped down (f2.0 - f2.4) it gives great isolation of the subject from the background, with excellent across-the-frame sharpness and no noticeable vignetting. I haven't experienced any problems with focus speed and it always seems to "nail" the focus in real-world use, even at very low light levels (i.e. no obvious back or front focusing issues on my sample!) It's well-made, light, small(-ish for a 50mm prime) and smooth and quiet in use.
Is it worth the money? I can't say - the premium over the 1.8D, or even the 1.4D, is steep (and getting steeper, it would seem.) Is it a joy to use? Yes. Does it nail the shot every time? Yes. Have I taken it off my camera body yet? No (and I do have some other very nice, but slower, lenses.) So, if you want to invest in a fast 50mm lens for Nikon and you have a body that handles "G" lenses, I can certainly recommend this one (although I understand it is not very good for architectural photography, but I can't imagine why you would buy this version for such an application anyway.)
"Great Portrait Lens" 2009-10-27 By Happy Snapper (Cambridge, UK) Bought this from Calumet alongside a D300 and 16-85 VR zoom, specifically for portraits of my young son. The 1.4 fast speed has been invaluable, together with quick focussing and the ability at faster apertures to blur backgrounds. This lens does all of that well, and the results have been stunning.
If you are looking for your first prime, you might (in the DX system) also look at the 35mm f1.8 as well, which is considerably cheaper. I've used both, and whilst there is not much to choose between them this 50mm edges it slightly, particularly in terms of sharpness at higher speeds.
Very Highly Recommended.
"The Classic from a classic stable" 2009-09-17 By M. C. PETER (Kiel) Nikon and other optics manufacturers set the standards back in the 1960s, when the first commercially successful SLR cameras were launched. The 50mm or 55mm lens was the first standard - now called "prime" lens - which was generally supplied with the camera. However, and no matter how cheaply the first "prime" lenses were sold, they were normally provided in a less advantageous format than what was required by the so-called "discerning" photographer, or indeed by the professional.
So it was that, if you wanted a top-class lens, not only did the optical engineering have to be faultless, but the lens had to let in enough light for fast operation in the 60s available-light mode, fashionable and challenging as that was. Unless you pushed your Kodak Tri-X to 1600 ASA, you were not able to obtain indoor shots at such concerts as the MJQ at Leeds(1966)with much chance of success. Here's where the best lenses played their part.
With a maximum aperture of f 1.4, the Nikon 50 mm became a leader. This same focal length today, used with a digital SLR gives the near equivalent of the old 85mm standard portrait lens, but with f 1.4 aperture. Of course, it has been much improved since the good old days, and is worth absolutely every penny. A lens for every photographer worth his salt. Buy one now.

"Excellent" 2010-06-22 By P. Osborne (England) Well made, quality construction, and "feel". Very smooth operation. Very flexible focal length range. Mine is married to my D90 - great all rounder lens with excellent image quality throughout the range. The only compromise that is inherent with any zoom of this size is the widest aperture - at which point I swap out to a 50mm f1.4 or f1.8.
"Oh, dear. I'm hooked..." 2009-11-05 By Ade Best The R715 AF-S Nikkor 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED is a DX format lens and is fully compatible with my Nikon D-60. In fact, it will work with a whole swathe of Nikon DSLR cameras, but in general, the older the model, the fewer features may be available.
It includes Vibration Reduction (VR), and - so far - fully auto or manual modes at the push or press of the necessary switches or buttons work at will, as expected.
It only arrived a couple of days ago (at near record-breaking speed as usual, in spite of industrial action within the postal service - well done Amazon), so I haven't had the chance to give it a proper roaming road test. However, initial efforts do not disappoint.
It's longer by 1.5cm than the 18-55mm lens that came with the kit version of the camera I bought. It needs 67mm rather than 52mm filters, hoods, and other attachments at the objective lens end. A bit heavier too, because of all the glass inside to cover the amazing focal length range, but still handy.
A big plus is that the overall barrel diameter is pretty much the same, so it will fit into any smaller `day bag' that already takes, say, the D-60 or similar sized camera fitted with a standard lens, plus a longer lens, spare battery, speedlite and a few other bits, and certainly doesn't cause a problem with the full size bag.
It comes ready-to-go with a `crown' lens hood, rear lens cap and pouch. The focus and zoom rings have a pleasingly precise, slightly viscous resistance, although, as I've found with other Nikkor lenses, the focus ring gearing is fast, and only the slightest tweak is needed to fine-tune once you're near the spot, using the camera's excellent viewfinder digital rangefinder.
Apart from specialists - I'm not - this is almost the universal lens, covering most of the bases. To put its scope in perspective, the DX 18-105mm lens is approximately equivalent to a 28-150mm version in 35mm format. But much more compact. Very pleased, and you won't have to change lenses very often.
