 "delighted" 2009-04-30
By J. W. Bolling (Ayr, Scotland)
Ordered this lens last week from Simply Electronics. Arrived wihin three days. An amateur, but not a beginner. I have now taken in excess of 100 shots with this lens. Really superior to the kit lens with EOS 100D. Light in weight, but does not feel fragile. IS is very useful at 250mm.

AF is quick and responsive to scene. The detail and colour balance produced by this lens is excellent. It certainly is not an expensive lens - but the performance far outweighs the cost.

I am a very delighted amateur. Recommend the lens and Simply Electronics.

Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300 millimeter focal length. It's the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range.  "Very Good lens, but it has a slight problem" 2010-02-15
By Richard Smith (Hull UK)
For the money this lens was excellent, however the one problem i have with it is when i switch from Macro to Normal telephoto it gets a bit "Sticky" until i zoom in and out once or twice, I am not sure whether it's a fault on mine, or with the product in general, so i am docking one star! The delivery was FIRST CLASS, it was here in 3 days all the way from the US, and came with a box full of extra cleaning goodies free of charge! brilliant! I was unsure about getting a Sigma lens, as they have a bit of a stigma, not being as good as the Cannon ones, but for the price I think its a great product!

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens with Opteka 58mm UV Filter for Canon EOS SLR Cameras Including the 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, & 1000D

This zoom lens is solidly constructed and has a smooth action.

It's macro function is a useful extra but be aware that it operates from 0.95m away at the closest! So you get ultra close up zoomed in on objects that are at least 0.95m from you, takes getting use to.

Obviously without anti-shake and with a small f stop range it does suffer from problems of shake in low light unless you use a high speed virtual iso rating.

Well worth its low cost.

Be aware that this product is shipped from New York and the way they ship it, import duty wise, strikes me as slightly odd. You don't pay any extra to the quoted price but I wonder if that is all as it should be?

 "Very good telephoto lens" 2009-08-05
By Richie Cunningham (all around it depends on the weather)
Like most people looking at this lens I had a choice between the canon 75-300 and this sigma lens. I the macro feature was selling point. It's not a great a macro but having it is always a bonus. At first I was apprehensive about using the lens during the low light since the focal factor is small and I was worried about the weight. But it' is a telephoto lens and It's expected to be heavy.

I used the lens to cover the london triathlon which invovled lots of running around and taking allot of action shots. The lens was great for both the photo quality and weight. After basically holding it up for an entire day it still felt fine. The only drawback was shots at low light but this involves the camera to much steadier , this can be resolved using a standard SLR tripod that supports telephoto lenses.

This is a great lenses for the more serious hobbyists like myself who don't want to invest an much more expensive telephoto lenses.

 "Excellent value for money." 2010-05-17
By G. I. John
As with most of the reviews of this product I am very impressed with its build, performance and end results. For the price and with the UV filter I think it is excellent value and fully recommend it. I am an elderly keen amateur and it reminds me of the sturdy. no nonsense yet very highly functional Russian lenses of over half a century ago. The wild life here in Wiltshire do not seem troubled by any focussing noise!!

Finally I must compliment 47th Street Photo for its excellent service re packaging and speed of delivery even thought air freight was severely hampered by volcanic dust. All in all full marks.

 "Excellent value for money" 2010-03-27
By Martin Hall
I received this package yesterday, and have been using it for several hours now. I read some of the earlier reviews, and cant quite understand the criticism, when you factor in price as well. I am by no means a professional photographer, but i enjoy taking pictures and this lens for me is perfect value for money. Its noisy on automatic mode, but with manual its fine. To really enjoy this lens I would recommend using manual mode anyways, and its quite easy to figure out, even for non-experienced photographers. I tested on automatic mode as well, and it seems to have a hard time finding the object (im using a Nikon D60). But as said, manual works great, and for a non-pro its a great buy.

By Mr. Mark Hall (England)
Its a cheap and cheerful lens, its ok for a light walk about lens fitted on a Nikon D40, but once you put it on to a better camera a Nikon D700 full frame it shows all the faults you get with a cheap lens.

I would not recommend it for serious photographers.

 "Well worth the money!" 2010-05-05
By P. Hammond (UK)

Having recently bought the Canon Eos 500d I was looking for that extra zoom range that you obviously can't achieve with the 18-55mm kit lens. I've had this lens just over a month and I really think it's been worth every penny. The pictures come out sharp and you'll immediately notice the greater depth of field thats possible when taking portraits from a small distance. My overall picture taking has definately improved just from owning this lens!

Only down side i'd say is the need to change between the lens' for different situations but it doesn't take long, just be carefull not to let the evil dust get into the camera body when doing so!

If you're looking for that next step up from the kit lens then I couldn't recommend this one more to be fair. Good price for a good lens!

"Best price/quality you can get" 2010-03-10
By Bruno Delgado (Portugal)
You can't go wrong at this price!

Does what it says, 55 to 250 (actually 88 to 400 in a 1.6 crop sensor like EOS 500D if I'm not mistaken)

The f/4-5.6 is not that fast, but, again, at this price, you know...

The IS is a blessing, and despite the front rotating while focusing (a pain to use circular polarisers)it has a proper focusing ring, unlike the kit 18/55, and the engine is rather silent in comparison to that one

The image quality is fine

While it is not lens enough for birding (slowish and short ranged)is a must have for every day shooting, combined with the kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8 II

Also I must say I saved about 100 Euros for buying it here on Amazon rather than a photography shop around the corner (Portugal)
