Capable of macro photography, this lens has a 1:2 maximum close-up magnification at the 300 millimeter focal length. It's the ideal high performance lens for portraits, sports photography, nature photography, and other types of photography that frequently use the telephoto range. The lens features a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200 millimeters and 300 millimeters, with a maximum close-up magnification from 1:2.9 to 1:2.

The multi-layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras, and it also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range. The minimum focusing distance is 59 inches at all zoom settings. The lens features a switch for changeover to macro photography at focal lengths between 200 millimeters and 300 millimeters with a maximum close-up magnification. Very nice item at a price that's a fraction of the Canon equivalent. Easy to use and came with useful accessories.

"Very Good lens, but it has a slight problem" 2010-02-15
By Richard Smith (Hull UK)
For the money this lens was excellent, however the one problem i have with it is when i switch from Macro to Normal telephoto it gets a bit "Sticky" until i zoom in and out once or twice, I am not sure whether it's a fault on mine, or with the product in general, so i am docking one star! The delivery was FIRST CLASS, it was here in 3 days all the way from the US, and came with a box full of extra cleaning goodies free of charge! brilliant! I was unsure about getting a Sigma lens, as they have a bit of a stigma, not being as good as the Cannon ones, but for the price I think its a great product!

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro Telephoto Zoom Lens with Opteka 58mm UV Filter for Canon EOS SLR Cameras Including the 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D, 300D, 350D, 400D, 450D, & 1000D

This zoom lens is solidly constructed and has a smooth action.

It's macro function is a useful extra but be aware that it operates from 0.95m away at the closest! So you get ultra close up zoomed in on objects that are at least 0.95m from you, takes getting use to.

Obviously without anti-shake and with a small f stop range it does suffer from problems of shake in low light unless you use a high speed virtual iso rating.

Well worth its low cost.

Be aware that this product is shipped from New York and the way they ship it, import duty wise, strikes me as slightly odd. You don't pay any extra to the quoted price but I wonder if that is all as it should be?

 "Very good telephoto lens" 2009-08-05
By Richie Cunningham (all around it depends on the weather)
Like most people looking at this lens I had a choice between the canon 75-300 and this sigma lens. I the macro feature was selling point. It's not a great a macro but having it is always a bonus. At first I was apprehensive about using the lens during the low light since the focal factor is small and I was worried about the weight. But it' is a telephoto lens and It's expected to be heavy.

I used the lens to cover the london triathlon which invovled lots of running around and taking allot of action shots. The lens was great for both the photo quality and weight. After basically holding it up for an entire day it still felt fine. The only drawback was shots at low light but this involves the camera to much steadier , this can be resolved using a standard SLR tripod that supports telephoto lenses.

This is a great lenses for the more serious hobbyists like myself who don't want to invest an much more expensive telephoto lenses.
