The CRD-39 is one of the latest bedside DAB digital radio by Roberts, giving you the latest DAB digital radio [Roberts CRD39] experience combined with a traditional FM receiver.
As you would expect from Roberts the CRD-39 has all the features you will need; a crystal clear stereo speaker, sleep/snooze and auto tuning, along with 5 alarms/timers. The timer function allows you to set-up a timed recording with the CRD-39 connected to an external recording device.
The CRD-39's bright blue backlit display provides an easy to read screen, full of all the essential information DAB and RDS (on FM) has to offer. In addition there is the option to store up to 10 presets, giving you quick access to your favourite stations. The CRD-39's built in speakers provides excellent clarity, as you would expect from a Roberts product.
The CRD-39 also features on touch access to Classic FM thanks to the dedicated Classic FM button, which is [Classic FM] located on the front of the unit. Perhaps Classic FM is not to your liking? No need to worry as the CRD-39 offers you the option to connect your MP3 Player or iPod, so you can play your favourite tunes back through its impressive stereo speakers. The CRD-39 comes complete with a fully featured remote control which gives you access to your alarm, Pause Plus, presets, volume and tuning.
With a single press of the Pause Plus button you can put your favourite station on hold. After the interruption simply press Pause Plus and listen from the point at which you left. So you never miss a single word! Radio stations can effectively be put on hold for typically 20 minutes but can be up to 40 minutes depending on the station you are listening to. You can also rewind a live DAB broadcast by pressing the Pause Plus button twice, ideal for listening to a favourite tune again or catching the end of the news.

Wanting something that would not only be a good radio alarm this has more than fulfilled its purpose. The alarm section can be set in a variety of ways and five different settings, this is very precise but it is easy to set. One unexpected bonus, if you have to unplug to move or going on holiday, when you plug it in it will reset itself in just the way you first set it, there are five options for stations, and as a bonus a red button that sets to Classic FM. The time always sets itself automatically.
As if that were not enough it has a fantastic remote control, better made than any that I have used before. So impressed with this equipment purchased a further one for a lounge which did not have DAB, it will pick up FM but the DAB is very good, as somebody who always thought nothing could be better than FM, this has proved me wrong.

I was very pleased with the fast and efficient service on ordering my Roberts digital radio. The radio itself is very good and gives me as good reception as anything in Market Harborough which is not noted for radio reception.
The remote control is small and works really well and is easy to use especially at night. Thankyou for such good service.

Sound Quality:
Very clear sound - good crisp high frequencies do not expect ANY real bass from this system, the speakers are too small and the enclosure too shallow, there is no fancy trickery in this box to mimic bass like boss systems etc and it isnt particularly loud.
Alarm clock
Easy to set up alarms, without looking at the manual was setting the alarm within 30 seconds of receiving the unit. A couple of notes - to stop setting alarms you need to press the on/off button on the unit whilst the volume is set to what ever the volume is when you set the alarm. A favourite feature of the system for me is that the unit automatically dims the display as there is a built in sensor meaning it isnt too bright when you go to sleep and you can see it fine when the lights come on.
Radio signal is fine had no problems tuning all the stations in or storing them in memory.
All in all very happy with the unit, would be perfect if bass was better and was a little louder so could use it to play my TV through.

The Roberts CRD-39 has several very useful features; namely the renowned 'PausePlus' capability and an IR remote control which allows all functions to be accessed.
To my amazement, the 'wire' antenna works OK but you may have to fiddle a bit with it if the unit is sited low-down in a room for example as the incoming signal is likely to be shielded. Some people might prefer a 'normal' telescopic aerial, but as my radio is sited in a cabinet the wire version is the only viable option...
I find the 'Pause Plus' live pause/rewind of DAB broadcasts very useful and this unit is unusual in allowing Fast-Forward/Rewind to be performed by the second (by permanently pressing the respective button) AND in '10s 'chunks' (with each pressing of the respective button), whereas most models only allow it to be done in 'chunks'. It should be noted that, amazingly, the user guide states that it even works if the radio is off (not found on all PausePlus-equipped Roberts radios); when you turn the radio on and press the 'Pause Plus' button twice it should activate this very useful 'background' feature, BUT I am unsure it works as I understand the user guide explanation. I've yet to prove it stores what has been broadcast whilst turned off; instead it appears to simply store what was broadcast the last time it was on (I hope you understand what I mean by that !).
The unit firmware is based on that also utilised by the CRD-33, RD-59 and RD-55 (for example), but despite this it, thankfully, does not share the maximum 'memory' limitation and instead can be paused for over 30mins.... This firmware 'family' also means there are 5 memory presets on each radio band, a scrollable station display/selector facility and the FM radio side has RDS.
The 2-line LCD has a blue backlight which is permanently on whilst the radio is turned on, but the intensity is controlled automatically. It allows for DAB broadcast information to be 'scrolled' below the station information, as well as a range of other (selectable) data to be permanently shown, including the date/time (which is also set automatically). Graphics are shown for the various other functions when they are activated.
It has separate bass/treble controls for the stereo speakers, which output sound very well and, notably, have a good bass reproduction. There is a headphone socket, a 'Line-In' facility and an optical digital output socket.
There are 5 alarms/timers, which can be set for any particular date/time then once/daily/weekly/weekdays/weekends/monthly then used to activate either the DAB, FM or 'Buzzer' (as Roberts call it; it's actually an electronic 'beep'-type alarm sound) for a selected duration up to 240mins max (designed like that if being used as a source for recordings). The DAB station/FM frequency can be selected and the buzzer volume gradually increases over time to a fixed-intensity maximum.
It has a 'snooze' feature and when an alarm is set the corresponding switch is lit to 'warn' you. The unit also has a 'sleep' timer for the radio, which can be set to your desired duration up to a max of 99mins..
To correct comments in other reviews, all the above functions ARE available on the remote and the date/time IS displayed when the unit is in alarm-set mode. It works very well and has good 'click' responsive buttons; my only gripe is that the addition of a 'Mute' button would have been very useful, although you can achieve a similar effect by simply pausing the broadcast albeit you then have to press the 'Info' button to 'resurrect' whatever you had selected to be shown on the bottom line of the display...
So, all-in-all an excellent purchase with few competitors of comparable quality and specification, but the aerial-type might not suit everyone....

You would think that Roberts would be top of the range so why have they put a tacky classic fm logo on here. That aside, I have to agree entirely with the reviewer re the antenna, do BE WARNED - I rang the helpdesk and was told to get a decent aerial and that these radios have little bits of wire in them because people don't want aerials in their bedrooms (?). No but we'd like something that isn't constantly out of tune! I have now got a much cheaper roberts radio with a telescopic aerial next to my bed, no alarm of course. Lie-ins for me.
One other thing, the sleep function is not operated from the remote, so if you want to doze off with the radio on and the thing isn't next to your bed, you'll have to get out of bed to hit the button...
