 "Great idea, flawed execution" 2010-05-07
By Muso (Scotland)
Having had a few DAB radios before I was interested in getting an internet radio. Having lived overseas I thought it would be great ot be able to hear stations I listened to while away. I can also listen to other stations in UK that cannot be picked up in my area. The idea is simple, you can register with TheLounge.com and save favourite stations and these will be picked up by your radio. Simple! Also there is the Listen Back feature. This is great. You can listen back to anything you want that is recognised under the Listen Back function.

There are several drawbacks to this system:

-never been able to link to my iTunes which you are supposed to be able to do. I always get error messages.

-system freezes frequently. Have to remove battery pack which is fiddly to get in and out.

-battery doesn't always keep charge!

-will sometime lose connection and either won't play station or rebuffs station.

-listen again feature doesn't appear to stay in same place if pause and move to anther station then move back to "listen again' it will start at the beginning again.

Great though as have been introduced to new stations such as Triple J in Australia and xid 97.7 in Iceland. Play better stuff than UK stations.

By and large I love this radio but I just get the feeling the technology is not perfect yet.

Good points:

-sound quality

-clear display

-easy to use touch functions/ remote

-choice of stations available

-listen again feature

 "Pure Magic" 2010-04-27

Excellent quality internet radio. Sounds, feels and looks great. The controls are a bit awkward but fine once you master them. This has the added advantage that it has become 'my' radio as others in our house haven't invested the time to learn how to use it.

If you leave your wireless router on all the time you don't need to have your computer on to use the Evoke as an internet radio ( it took me a while to 'discover' this ). Consequently I never use it as a 'normal' FM radio. The listen again feature is excellent and, as I'm interested in jazz, having access to the worldwide stations with superb sound quality is huge benefit.

Some negatives :

It takes a few moments to connect and buffer when you switch it on. This is probably just a consequence of the technology but you kind of expect an instant response when you switch on a radio. Again this has the benefit of putting off less patient users in my house.

Also, I found setting it up so it streams music from my PC very very difficult. The main problem was resetting the firewall permissions. I spent longer on this that any sane person should have. It now works but I can't link it to iTunes only Windows Music player.

It is streets ahead of my first-generation Revo Internet radio, but the controls and interface are really difficult and counter-intuitive. Download the pdf user manual (use Internet Explorer as it is not easy with Firefox) and you will get the hang of it. Hopefully they will get the software right in the coming months.

 "Pure Evoke Flow" 2010-04-20

I received this item yesterday after reading all of the negative comments on here, and I have to say I don't see what all the negative comments are about.

The set up is easy - I plugged it in and the installation wizard was really easy to follow. It was operational within 5 minutes. Adding Wifi an inputting the Wifi password was simple. When you do tune into an internet radio station the buffering only takes about 2-4 seconds not the one minute previous reviews mention. The radio updated the firmware automatically when connected to the Wifi so perhaps there had been some upgrades to the software to fix the bugs?

The only negatives I have are

1. You cannot omit Saturday and Sunday from the daily alarm. You have to manually turn it off at the weekend. There was a feature on my Pure Tempus that allowed you to run the morning alarm Monday to Friday only which was more useful.

2. When the unit is switched off, the standby power button remains illuminated which is quite bright in a dark bedroom. It would be great if there was an option to turn all the illumination off at night or when the radio is powered down and only have it light up when you hit the snooze handle

3. Getting your head around the sub menus it a bit complicated, but you soon get used to it.

Apart from that it's a great sounding product that is quick to install. DAB is clear and better reception than my previous Pure radios.
