In the legendary series of educational films from the 1970s, designers Charles and Ray Eames zoom out from a man resting in a park in downtown Chicago, transporting us in minutes to intergalactic space. At the point at which we reach the bounds of human knowledge, they stop... and zoom back in. Only this time, their camera doesn't stop... surveying deeper and deeper inside his skin, ultimately to the level of sub-atomic particles. Now, we're not suggesting for a second that this handy desktop 200 x magnification USB microscope will take you anywhere near sub-atomic resolution from the comfort of your own PC, but it will give you a darned good look at your skin, should you wish. Here at gadgetshop HQ we're huge admirers of Universal Serial Bus technology, as the legion of USB-compliant devices in these pages will attest. And this high-tech microscope, which offers full 1.3Mp resolution, is among the most inventive USB tool we have yet seen. With a host of pro-quality features, including variable magnification, widescreen imaging and a range of image capture options, all illuminated by 4 bright onboard LEDs, the sky (or rather, the world right in front of you) is the limit. Enabling awe-inspiring close-ups, and both still image 'snapshot' and full motion video capture, could there be a better way of passing a chill winter's evening than blowing up one's own hair follicle to the size of the Titanic? We thought not.

 "Veho VMS-001 USB Microscope" 2010-04-26
By D. Smith (Wiltshire, UK)
I bought this product to study and photograph insect inclusions in Baltic Amber (usually no bigger than 2 to 3mm). I have to admit, I did not have great expectations, but after using it for a couple of weeks, the results are quite amazing. I had already tried a conventional microscope, but the resulting images were poor in comparison. In my case, the software loaded without problem and ran on Windows7. By trying various resolutions and adding additional lighting, I have been able to attain far better results than one would expect. Images can be further enhanced by using Extended Depth of Field and noise reduction software, which although not necessary, help to produce stunning images. In my opinion, this is a very powerful little microscope at a fraction of the cost of conventional microscopes. It can be used for fun and more serious study, but you have to investigate the options available in order to get the best out of it. My only hope is that they introduce a 5 megapixel (or similar) version in the future, which will make this item hard to beat. I was hoping to include some sample pics in this review, but do not think it's possible.

Buy one, you won't be disappointed.

"Did not work for me" 2010-02-14
By fitcs (MA ( at the moment ))
I was surprised that the Veho support folks replied more than once. Told me to remove my webcam drivers as they were my problem. So, 3 different PC's later I decided to reload XP on one of my machines and give it a go.

No joy - camera always comes up as an unrecognized device.

Mine was a gift but I suspect I would not be too surprised that something costing so little may not work so well - Really liked the idea of this and have seen some Youtube demo's that look good but it did not work for me.

I am still engaged with the nice support folks at Veho - we will see. If they fix it for me I will change my score from 1 to 5.

 "Excellent" 2010-02-07

Very good product ,does exactly what it says. Juast a little bit confusing in that it says magnification 20 - 200 times which I took to mean 'variable' but I was wrong. There is only one magnification but, having said that, results are good.

 "Very pleasing present" 2010-01-20
By F. Mellor (UK)
Bought 2 of these as presents (for an adult and 12 year old). Both parties got the software installed and all worked fine. We all had fun on Xmas day looking up close at various gross and not so gross things. Very good value.
