Features * Affordable telephoto zoom lens * 88-400mm equivalent focal length * 4-stop Image Stabilizer with automatic panning detection * UD element * Super Spectra coatings * Circular diaphram The all-purpose telephoto zoom for EF-S mount EOS cameras. Affordable, powerful telephoto zoom The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS is a telephoto zoom lens combining powerful performance with high image quality. With a focal length equivalent of 88-400mm in 35mm format, it is ideal for photographers seeking an affordable, versatile lens for general-purpose telephoto photography. This allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 times slower with no perceptible increase in image blur. Automatic panning detection automatically turns off the Image Stabilizer in either the horizontal or vertical direction when following moving subjects. UD lens element The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS employs a Canon UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) lens element to suppress the effects of secondary chromatic aberrations - for crisp, sharp, high-contrast images without fringing throughout the zoom range. Super Spectra Coatings Canon's Super Spectra coatings combat ghosting and flare by absorbing light that may be reflected off digital camera sensors or internal lens elements. Super Spectra coatings also help ensure accurate colour balance and sharp, high-contrast results. Circular aperture diaphragm For shots taken at large aperture, a circular aperture diaphragm creates smooth, even bokeh (background blur) - ideal for emphasising subjects shot against distracting backgrounds. "Top Class" 2010-06-06 By Mr. Surinder Saggu Very happy with this product. It does what it says. it was delivered within 3 days
AF and MF works perfectly with Immage Stablizer.
"delighted" 2009-04-30 By J. W. Bolling (Ayr, Scotland) Ordered this lens last week from Simply Electronics. Arrived wihin three days. An amateur, but not a beginner. I have now taken in excess of 100 shots with this lens. Really superior to the kit lens with EOS 100D. Light in weight, but does not feel fragile. IS is very useful at 250mm.
AF is quick and responsive to scene. The detail and colour balance produced by this lens is excellent. It certainly is not an expensive lens - but the performance far outweighs the cost.
I am a very delighted amateur. Recommend the lens and Simply Electronics.

"Barrel Distortion" 2010-07-18 By J. Street (U.K.) Not a bad lens but very poor for architecture photography due to extreme barrel distortion at the wide end, as has been reported by another reviewer. I know that this can be fixed in photoshop to some extent but I would much prefer to have better results straight out of the camera.
"Shabby optics at widest settings" 2010-06-28 By F41 (Worcestershire, UK) This is a decent enough all round lens, and certainly an improvement over the kit lens, but I bought it to use primarily in the widest end of its zoom range and at 17mm, the image quality is quite poor. It's a strange one because zoom in a bit, and it's a really good lens, producing clear images, but at 17-18mm, there is significant distortion and chromatic aberration to the point that some images have needed significant Photoshop work to remove the colour fringing.
The image stabiliser doesn't seem hugely useful in a lens this wide and I think I'd be better served by a bigger aperture. If I was in the position to make the choice again, I'd probably forego the extra mm and get the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 EX DC instead for similar money.
"Fantastic kit lens replacement." 2010-05-10 By C. Gabbitas (Notts, UK) I bought this lens as a replacement for the kit lens on my 400d and i couldn't be happier. After weeks of searching the right lens i chose the canon above the sigma and am happy i did. I'm sure the sigma produces good quality images but i just felt the build quality of this lens was worth the extra.
"Good walkaround lens but there are better alternative" 2010-04-03 By Claude L. Sadik I bought this lens to replace my Canon 550D 18-55mm IS kit lens. I've only been using it for the last few days and mainly for video. The 17-85mm range, makes it a good walk-around lens. The USM is fast and discreet. The image stabilization is very efficient. However I would have prefer a wider aperture. 4.0-5.6 is barely enough. While filming the focus ring is pretty smooth which is not the case of the zoom ring - a bit choppy while used slowly. The overall construction quality is OK but could be better.
It does what I expect it to do but not more, I'll probably replace it as soon as I have enough money.
If you want to upgrade from the kit lens, there should probably be a better choice for the same price.
"A Great Upgrade and Big Improvement on the 18-55mm Kit Lens" 2010-03-08 By John H (UK) This lens while quite expensive is a very worthwhile investment. Its 17-85mm zoom range will effectively upgrade your camera to a 5x zoom.
The kit lens offers 18-55mm (just over 3x) so with this in mind you are starting off from a slightly wider angle coupled with a much stronger zoom. Also you get image stabilization along with much better quality glass, the improvement in picture quality is very worthwhile. I would say my camera now spends over 90% of its time with this lens attached. The only downside is that this solid lens is much heavier than the flimsy plastic kit lens.

"Canon EF-S 60 f 2.8 Macro. A very nice lens!" 2010-03-27 By John W. Thompson (England) This is a very good lens in the EF-S range of lenses for crop-sensor DSLR cameras.
It's small and light, and build quality is good. Equivalent to 96mm. in film camera terms, it's ideal for portraits, group shots etc. as well as macro, with the f 2.8 aperture giving a nice background blur. Image quality is excellent, and the auto focus is fast & accurate. Full-time manual focus is available for final tweaking. The lens is of course suitable for mounting a ring flash (which I don't have!) but so far I've been able to use the on-camera flash without any problem.
A nice addition to my set of lenses, and at a reasonable price.
"Good Macro lens" 2010-03-17 By Mr. D. Mapp I have not used the lens to its full as yet, but the pictures I have taken using the macro is very good even when hand held.
"Macro lens" 2010-01-31 By Dr. Stuart Jones (Rochester, UK) I bought this lens because it came highly recommended. It has stunning resolution. It feels good. Working close up you need the manual focus because it focuses on something perfectly, but not always the right something. To get the depth of field a tripod is a must to work with slow shutter speeds and ISO100. But I so love this lens. There are things I have worked with for 20 years and barely seen the holes. Now I see in intimate detail the dust on the inside of the holes! It deserves 6 stars!
"Really good" 2010-01-14 By Mr (UK) really good macro lense, used in india for wildlife photography and it performed extremely well, a must have in the mid price range.
"smile please!" 2009-07-17 By Robert Smith Had this lens a while and taken a LOT of pictures.....actually that should read 'a lot of VERY GOOD pictures', because this is a big lens for quite a small amount of money! Its solidly built, copes extremely well with being put through't mill and can certainly walk the walk!
It does benefit from being used on a tripod, but have been surprised at how adaptable it can be. Achieving excellent close-up detail is remarkably easy and portraits, in particular, require minimal tinkering with.
All in all, satisfaction guaranteed!
