I purchased this to replace a Tamron lens which was so-so, in the hope of getting better quality pictures. I was not disappointed. The lens arrived next day as promised, in time to take it on holiday.I shot several pics with it, and two were especially good- one of rocks on the seashore and another of an old tin mine building. The detail was breathtaking!It is not too heavy to carry around, and the IS mechanism is very quiet and efficient. It also looks great! This is my 1st lens from the 'L' range, and I hope to acquire more.

The EF70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a top quality lens that produces sharp photos, good colour and performs well in situations such as low light. I have tested it with my EOS 50D and achieved great results including very pleasing background blurring. It is lightweight, compact and easy to use. Autofocus is fast and quiet. Image Stabilizer works well and there is an option for panning. The 200mm focal length is good and for anyone taking wildlife shots, an optional extender can be used with this lens. It comes with a lens hood and case. Yes, it is expensive, but worth spending more for one of Canon's top-of-the-range L series lenses.

Believe every good thing you have read or heard about this lens!
I wanted a new tele zoom for my crop-sensor DSLR and (to be honest) to finally own a lens from the Canon L range. I considered it's big brother (the f2.8 version) and the 100-400, but both seemed to be too heavy & bulky. There is also the much cheaper non-IS version but to me IS is an essential feature for a hand-held tele zoom. I'm not into tripods, as I already have enough weight to carry around in my backpack.
I simply cannot fault this lens. For the size & weight, the build quality, AF, IS and optical performance are outstanding. For me the 'icing on the cake' is the zoom reach. Add on the 1.4 extender and the zoom is almost 450mm. This is a reach only dreamed about by most amateur film photographers (myself included) only ten years ago.
Yes it's expensive, but if you can afford the price then go for it! I don't think you will be disappointed.

Obviously from the price this is not an amateur lens. But it's much, much lighter than an 2.8 zoom, the stabilization is excellent (I've made sharp photos down to 1/15 sec at 200mm), it's full frame, and it's damnable sharp. It's one of those lenses which makes me feel I am not wasting the 21 megapixels in the 5D mark II.

Purchased this lens over a fortnight ago, after arguing with myself that the expense WAS totally justified. It was! Immeasurably so! In fact I've found it incredibly difficult to put down.
I've got it on my 40D at present and the balance is just right. Not too cumbersome and could see no problems carrying it round all day. Can't wait to put it through its paces and see what it can really do. The IS does what it says on the tin though, which is essentially what you need to give you the confidence on the move.
Only quibble, on a personal level, is the size of the hood.....? BIG hood! A bit awkward to mess about with lens caps or polarising filters, especially if you've got big clumsy hands!

Cracking lens, sharp even wide open and it gets sharper stopped down! Creamy bokeh, quick and accurate focusing, internal focusing so front element does not protrude or rotate, great build quality, very nice size and weight. A bit of purple fringing in difficult lighting stuations.
It makes a good portrait lens, I use it on a cropper. Get one, you wont regret it.

Most keen photographers want at least one fast prime in their set of lenses. I've just bought this lens for my 500D, where it equates to a 135 medium tele lens on a film/full frame camera.
The lens is small and compact, not too heavy and with reasonable build quality. It doesn't have IS - none of the affordable primes in the EF range have this feature, and it's not much needed for short focal length lenses anyway. Just keep the shutter speed at 1/150 sec. or faster! The auto focus is very fast and accurate, and one shot full-time manual focus is available.
I've only had the lens a few days but I know what to expect - I had a fast prime for a film camera years ago! The major problem on film cameras was framing action shots - cropping slides wasn't really an option! - but with digital that problem has disappeared thanks to Photoshop. After a few trial shots I'm impressed - the lens seems sharp at all apertures. Background blur is great, but be very careful shooting wide open at close range - the depth of field may only be an inch or so. You may need to step back (with your feet!) or down with the aperture to get all of your subject in focus, and tweaking the manual focus will probably be needed.
The lens is great for portraits, but I'm itching to try it out on action shots - the fast/accurate focus and wide aperture will be an ideal combination. Those who only use zoom lenses just don't know what they are missing. There are situations - indoor sports, live theatre, gigs etc. - where the action-stopping combination of wide aperture and fast shutter speed available from a fast prime will beat the performance of most of the affordable zooms. I have an EF 70-200 f4 L IS - a superb zoom - but when the reach is adequate the prime will be far more suitable for low light situations.
My one niggle concerns the recommended lens hood (ET-65 111), and it's not the price. I have hoods for all my lenses, but this has an unusual pinch/pin mounting. It looks fragile, and sooner or later it will get the inevitable knock. I would have much preferred the normal thread mounting.
The bottom line is this is a very good lens - and a bargain at the price - and is sure to become my favourite lens for family portraits. If you think the focal length will suit you, just get one! Those with money to burn could opt for the EF 85 f1.2 - it is larger, heavier and has a whopping price tag of around £1700! For about 1/5 of that price, I am more than happy with this little beauty.

This is the best lens that I own. It's pin sharp and could be an 'L' lens. Purchased it for £320 on Amazon and then it dropped to £280 (gutted). Come on Amazon bring your 30 price drop guarantee back please.

This is one of the best bargain lenses going no question.
I've had a play around with this lens which was a recent purchase and for the price I am blown away. The build is great as is the focus rong - very smooth. Certainly as good as it gets with Canon's mid-level lenses.
But let's not dawdle - we're really all interested in image quality and this lens delivers big time. It's really sharp wide open and the vignetting is not too bad - not as bad as the 50mm 1.4 wide open that's a fact. I'd have no hesitation using wide open at any point - the only other lenses I can say that about are the 135mm f/2 L and the 24-105 f4 L. Used wide open the lens produces blur that is very smooth indeed and coupled in with the fact this lens has an 85mm focal length and it enables you to isolate subjects from a background at a decent distance.
The minimum focusing distance is 85cm, a little longer than I would have thought but the lens still enables the most fantastically narrow DOF effects you can think of.
Size wise it's probably only 15mm longer than the 50mm 1.4 and is therefore easy to pack into a kit bag.
Things do sharpen up when stopped down as with most lenses - but again for most real world applications you'll never notice the improvement if all you're doing is printing up to A4 at home say. All this means is that the lens will deliver at 1.8 and simply gets better from there on in. You can use it with confidence at any setting.
I really can't fault the lens at all. For the money it's superb value. AND, if you have a cropped body sensor camera it acts like a 136mm lens. For me, I have a 5D and 40D and it acts as an 85mm on the 5D and a 136mm on the 40D both - very desireable focal lengths to have with a f1.8 aperture.
Just buy it.
