I have had this lens on 2 Camera bodies, the first being the 450D and the current being the 50D. This lens is superb on the 450D, its sharp at 2.8 and superb at F4 upward to around F11. The only thing is, on my 50D it tends to rear focus by about 2" or so! But not every time so I am not able to use the 50D's focus adjustment! Its a real shame that this happens, it may just be my combi that doesnt get on? I use a Tamron 17-55mm F2.8 (non VC) and have no issues with that one. Because of this issue I have decided to sell this lens which is a big dissapointment to me as it is a superb lens overall with amazing IQ, for the price you will not beat it.

The best 'Standard Lens for the money'. The way things are going it makes sense to buy a DSLR body only and choose your own better quality lenses rather than opt for a cheap brand standard lens.
I'm happy with my purchase, I use a Canon 300D but the Tamron can be used on 35mm as well, also one mag review tested this lens up against a Canon costing £900, hardly value for money, the Tamron wins.

I had been looking for an upgrade to the cheap and cheerful kit lens that came with my canon 30D so did some extensive research on the forums to which lens would suit my needs for under £300.00.
Many of the forums were praising the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di and I must admit I am now one of the happy customers to add the list.
I've had this item for a couple of weeks now and have taken some 200 shots. I must say it has made a massive difference to the quality of my photos and the pleasure in taking and showing them from my Canon 30D. I have the 18-55 kit lens and also purchased the highly recommended budget priced Canon EF II 50mm f1.8 prime and to be honest, these two lenses have not been on my camera since the purchase.
My main shot subject is of my children and family so having the f2.8 across the range on this lens really helps in lower light conditions.
I've found the sharpness to be pinpoint, colours are rich and accurate, yes it sometimes hunts for focus a little in lower lighting, but not so much so that you'd really notice at all especially if this is your first more serious purchase of a lens.
My other options were the Canon 17-85 f/4.0-5.6 IS USM. Canons 17-85 has the wider range at both ends and Image Stabiliser but on the whole my theory is that for moving subjects like the kids IS won't make a whole lot of difference... it is the higher shutter speed that the constant f2.8 of this Tamron allows that makes the difference.
If you are considering a budget lens that wont blow the bank, I cannot praise this lens enough.

I bought this lens as a replacement for the standard 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 Sony kit lens that came with my Sony Alpha 200W DSLR, and I have to say it was worth it.
Although it only has roughly the same specification as the original sony lens, the difference in image quality is noticeable. I take alot of pictures of wildlife and motorsport (not to mention portraits and landscapes, but obviously not with this lens) and I had terrible purple fringing (CA) at 200-300mm particularly in high contrast situations, and I have to say this lens reduced this effect massively. This has improved image quality no end. At 62mm diameter it is also a better light gatherer (the Sony is 55mm dia) which helps to keep the shutter speed up in overcast conditions. In low light the autofocus can struggle and 'hunt' a little, but the Sony lens used to do this anyway and if you set up your autofocus to center spot AF, you should find moving targets are not really a problem. The manual focus ring is decent on this lens unlike some, so manual focus is not difficult when photographing stationary objects if the AF is struggling.
The lens build quality is good for the money, it is a plastic lens but to me I think of the weight saving this brings rather than looking at it as a negative. It's length is also shorter than some which makes it easier to hand hold coupled with its low weight.
If you are after your first telephoto zoom lens or are looking for a replacement for the Sony kit zoom lens and have not got £500 to spend, then I can certainly recommend this lens. It will do the job you want it to in most situations providing you the photographer, do your part of course.

Love This lens, it takes some good pictures as you can see from the ones I have uploaded. The only downside to the lens is the auto focus, it loves to go hunting around to find focus and by the time its found the subject you are shooting it may be to late if you use it for wildlife that is, but for big clear subjects it is OK, its also a little bit to noisy. For somebody on a tight budget I highly recommend this lens. Im using it on Sony a200.(which is a fab camera)

This lens was great choice for my budget, shame i didnt come to amzon first or would have saved Loads of dosh. the images it gives are great its like any piece of equipment you need to take time to get use to it and take your time with the shots. I use the lenss on my Sony A200 and glad I had Chosen the lens.

I have been an avid point and shoot photographer for years, capturing the delights of parties and holidays for my facebook account, but at Christmas I was given a Sony A230 so I could start taking my photography a bit more seriously. I am a big sports fan, so decided to test the camera out at my boyfriend's rugby game. I was delighted with the picture quality, but with the standard lens I could only get good shots when the action was right in front of me. So I decided I needed a zoom lens. As this is only a hobby for me I could not afford to spend mega bucks on it, so searched Amazon and Photo Plus magazine for some advice. This piece of equipment came highly reccommended, and carried a very reasonable price tag. And I must say it did not disappoint. My rugby shots are now improving week on week and are even going to be displayed in the team club house. The other thing I love about having a zoom lens is that people think you are a professional and get out of your way. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!

I was looking for an affordable lens in the long zoom range and all the canon lenses in this range were too expensive for my budget. I was attracted to this lens by the really affordable price and thought I would take the chance and buy one. I actually did not even bother to check whether this was an EF or EF-S equivalent lens until after I bought it. I was glad to find out that it was an EF equivalent which means that I can still use this lens if I upgrade to a full frame sensor camera in the future. I currently own a Canon EOS 50D and this lens looks really great on the camera. It has a very sporty appeal to it especially with the supplied lens hood attached.
I have taken some really great pictures with this lens and the bokeh is really amazing at the longer focal length and wide aperture. I was able to get some really close up shots of birds at a lake near where I live. It was an overcast day and I was able to shoot handheld at ISO 160 - 500 with great results.
The lens build for the price is really outstanding and pretty solid even though it's made out of plastic. Here's a list of pros and cons from my experience with this lens:
Pros: Low price - lightweight and solidly built - will fit APS-C and full frame Canon bodies - aesthetically appealing (looks great on the camera) - walkabout friendly - lens hood included - large zoom ring - no lens crawl along zoom range
Cons: Slightly noisy focus due to no USM - no internal focus - no VC
Overall you would be hard pressed to find a lens as good as this in this price range.

I usually use top of the range Nikon gear and do have the 18 200 VR II. My wife wanted a lens with a bit more reach but did not want to keep chnaging lenses so we went for this Tamron. So far it has produced perfectly acceptable images and has stood up to quite hard use (she takes it horse riding!). For pixel peppers, yes there is a bit of distortion, chromatic abberations and softness at the edges but for the average usuer this won't be a problem. She loves the lens and has produced some lovely shots with her D90 espechially at the tele end stopped down to F8 (6.3 is a bit soft but not noticable on 7X5's. If you want an all in one walk (or ride around) lens this is perfectly adequate for the casual photographer. I can see a differece at the tele end between my 70 200 VR II nikon but it's not that far behind and the nikon cost 4 x as much and is huge and heavy. People must go out and use their kit as that is what it is for and not fuss over MTF charts at this end of the market. I would be more than happy to take this lens on holiday or on a trip where I wanted to have a great zoom range and travel light.

I have used this lens with my Nikon D70 for about a month and taken about 200 photos with it.
The optical performance has surpassed my expectations. The lens is generally very sharp and only slightly soft at the corners at maximum telephoto (270mm) and full aperture (f6.3). Many photographers may not notice this unless they look carefully. At the other end of the scale (18mm) there is some barrel distortion which should be correctable in photoshop (though I have not done this). Also I think I see slight vignetting (I guess half a stop) at 18mm, but this may be due to the uv filter I use. Again, no serious problem.
However, there are handling issues. The most annoying is that autofocus does not always "confirm", even in good light, which means that the shutter will not fire as expected. This happens about 10-15% of the time and could be a show-stopper for some. The solution is to switch quickly to manual focus after the autofocus has done its best. I believe that this autofocus issue is worse if the camera battery is at less than half charge. Combined with a rather average focusing speed and mediocre handling this means that I would not recommend this lens for action/sports photography.
Another lesser handling problem is that the zoom control is not smooth and is distinctly stiffer in the mid-range (70mm to 130mm approx.) than at the ends. This is irritating and reminds me that I did not buy a Rolls Royce (or even a Nikon).
The lens is also prone to "zoom creep" - in other words it opens under its own weight while being carried. I don't find this a problem as there is a lock which keeps the lens at 18mm.
The vibration control (anti camera-shake)works very well and I can handhold 270mm telephoto at 1/100 sec., or possibly better. You can't do this with the Nikon equivalent lens as it doesn't go to 270mm!
Overall I am satisfied with this lens and it fulfills its all-purpose function well.

I purchased this lens on the strength of its very favorable reviews online and also in many photo magazines, I used this lens in comparison to my Canon EOS 7D kit lens the EF-S 18-135mm, can I save you people wasting your time with this lens, in back to back real life tests, the Canon kit lens wipes the floor with the Tamron, in every way, no I did not get a duff lens I had it checked out, thankfully I purchased this from Jessops, where I shall always return for their no quibble 30 day exchange policy, they may not be the cheapest, but they are worth paying that little extra for, the same goes for lenses I suppose.
I am just mad about the rubbish people print and write about online and in the photo mags, I hope you found this short review(not review factual true information) useful.

What can I add to previous reviews?
I've been using this lens as the main lens for my Canon 350D. I've already taken a few thousands pictures and can confirm that you will often find vignetting close to 270 and barrell distortion close to 18. Compared to other lens of the same kind such as Canon or Sigma the Tamron one is the best one, including all its defects it wins over the others. WIth these sort of lenses the best investment you can do is to add DXO Optics Pro Standard Edition. It will automatically fix vignetting and barrell distortion and I have to say the output is fantastic. So, buy this lens with DXO and you will never travel with more than one lens egain. Also consider this lens are also a good companion for who intends to purchase it with the new Canon 550D or even the 7D. Theses cameras have been tested with this Tamron lens and will give you near perfection results. The results by processing the images with DXO are fantastic so I really recommend these lens with the above cameras.

I purchased the Tamron only a few weeks ago. I have not done everything with it that I would like to. Here are my preliminary findings.
a. The zoom is not as fast as the Canon's kit lens. I thought this would be a major issue, but it turns out to be quite liveable. Most indoor shots still capture the moment. Much better than Non-DSLR performance on that.
b. The kids Nativity play brought out the best in the lens. With the normal flash I ould take good portraits uop to about 10-15 meteres in a very dimly lit hall. About 30% of the opictures were out of focus. Much better than I feared. At those distances the red-eye will be more of a pronlem with the pop-up flash because the flash will appear very close to the lens.
c. If you forget to unlock the lens you will just take pictures at widest zoom. You can just unlock when you need to.
I have always loved the "walkaround" lenses because they are so versatile. This is a lovely combination to take shots under most circumstances of an acceptable up to very good quality.
