"Nikon f1.8 - Low Cost Class Glass" 2010-05-23
By P. J. Menter
I've paired the AF Nikkor f1.8 50mm with a Nikon D300 giving a lens of roughly 85mm focal length and the combination is superb. The auto focussing and exposure operation are faultless. The body of the lens is plastic but the mount engagement and lens retaining parts are all metal. The focal lengths and f-stops are neatly painted onto the plastic barrel; with a lot of use these are likely to wear off eventually but at the low price for this lens that's a minor niggle.

There's a small slider switch on the body that allows fixing or releasing of the f-stop ring, its default position is f22 for automatic operation. On a modern digital its unlikely you'll find too much use for this but when operating fully manual it'll be just like an old mechanical camera, twist and shoot. The front lens element its heavily recessed in the mount so the chance of sun flare is very low without a lens hood. It comes with the superbly practical Nikon lens cap fitting into a 52mm screw mount.

Image quality and colour rendition are faultless - even if you have a zoom lens this is a great buy for portraits and getting out and about all day long with a lightweight combo that doesn't give you shoulder ache

 "a classic "must have"" 2009-07-16
By Mr. G. Bridgeman-clarke (Rayleigh UK)
Everyone had a 50mm lens on their film cameras and everyone underestimated how useful it was and it ended up in the cupboard. With digital cameras all of a sudden the 50mm lens is back in vogue and seen to be an excellent and very useful addition at a reasonable cost to anybodies camera bag.

I bought this lens a minth or so ago and on the downside its plastic but the advantages outweigh that. Its light, sharp and a great price. I use it for portrat work on my D3 but also on my D300 iyt becomes a great portrait lens with the equivilent focal length of 75mm. Very versitile.

Ok I would love to have the f1.4 but at over twice the price, its not as good value for money as this little gem.

 "The Nifty Fifty!" 2009-03-29
By Mr. D. Arrowsmith
In my view every Nikon DSLR owner should have either this or the f1.4 in his/her camera bag. The f1.8 is small, light and inexpensive and gives super image quality as well as the ability to shoot in low light without flash or other forms of studio or off camera lighting. It is ideal for portraits although some may consider it too sharp. It is a very sharp lens and some ladies may not like to have their little skin flaws exposed. I find a little Gaussian blur in Photoshop fixes that. A very nice lens well recommended.

 "Very Disappointed" 2010-03-18
By Jawboax (Scotland)
Have been using this with Nikon D90. The lens seems to have trouble focusing. For indoor photos without the flash, only around 1 in 20 turn out ok. The rest are blurred and/or grainy. The lens is much better for outdoor daylight shots or indoor using the flash but still no better than my £80 small zoom lens.

update 8.6.10-This lens has consistently let me down from the start. Most recent photos in daylight were terrible. I have altered my rating accordingly.

"Superb lens, an absolute must for the camera bag" 2010-01-20
By The D Man (Surrey)
I bought this lens to upgrade from the 1.8 AF D. I wondered if there would be much difference, but I wasn't left wondering for long. This is an amazing lens, the DOF at 1.4 is superb as you'd expect, but at f/4 it's as sharp as you could want to see in a lens. The possibilities with this on your body are endless, it truly is an amazing piece of glass and well worth the money.

 "Spot-on" 2010-01-08
By Peter H (UK)
I bought this in my local camera shop, just before Christmas when these were hard to come by. It's not my first prime lens (since I've been taking photographs regularly for over 25 years) but it is my first "fast" one. When I researched it, comments seemed rather mixed, but I eventually decided to get it anyway. I'm using it with an FX-sensor body and can now confirm that it is SUPERB. Used carefully, wide open, it gives wonderful pictures with a razor-thin depth of field. Slightly stopped down (f2.0 - f2.4) it gives great isolation of the subject from the background, with excellent across-the-frame sharpness and no noticeable vignetting. I haven't experienced any problems with focus speed and it always seems to "nail" the focus in real-world use, even at very low light levels (i.e. no obvious back or front focusing issues on my sample!) It's well-made, light, small(-ish for a 50mm prime) and smooth and quiet in use.

Is it worth the money? I can't say - the premium over the 1.8D, or even the 1.4D, is steep (and getting steeper, it would seem.) Is it a joy to use? Yes. Does it nail the shot every time? Yes. Have I taken it off my camera body yet? No (and I do have some other very nice, but slower, lenses.) So, if you want to invest in a fast 50mm lens for Nikon and you have a body that handles "G" lenses, I can certainly recommend this one (although I understand it is not very good for architectural photography, but I can't imagine why you would buy this version for such an application anyway.)

 "Great Portrait Lens" 2009-10-27
By Happy Snapper (Cambridge, UK)
Bought this from Calumet alongside a D300 and 16-85 VR zoom, specifically for portraits of my young son. The 1.4 fast speed has been invaluable, together with quick focussing and the ability at faster apertures to blur backgrounds. This lens does all of that well, and the results have been stunning.

If you are looking for your first prime, you might (in the DX system) also look at the 35mm f1.8 as well, which is considerably cheaper. I've used both, and whilst there is not much to choose between them this 50mm edges it slightly, particularly in terms of sharpness at higher speeds.

Very Highly Recommended.

"The Classic from a classic stable" 2009-09-17
By M. C. PETER (Kiel)
Nikon and other optics manufacturers set the standards back in the 1960s, when the first commercially successful SLR cameras were launched. The 50mm or 55mm lens was the first standard - now called "prime" lens - which was generally supplied with the camera. However, and no matter how cheaply the first "prime" lenses were sold, they were normally provided in a less advantageous format than what was required by the so-called "discerning" photographer, or indeed by the professional.

So it was that, if you wanted a top-class lens, not only did the optical engineering have to be faultless, but the lens had to let in enough light for fast operation in the 60s available-light mode, fashionable and challenging as that was. Unless you pushed your Kodak Tri-X to 1600 ASA, you were not able to obtain indoor shots at such concerts as the MJQ at Leeds(1966)with much chance of success. Here's where the best lenses played their part.

With a maximum aperture of f 1.4, the Nikon 50 mm became a leader. This same focal length today, used with a digital SLR gives the near equivalent of the old 85mm standard portrait lens, but with f 1.4 aperture. Of course, it has been much improved since the good old days, and is worth absolutely every penny. A lens for every photographer worth his salt. Buy one now.

 "Essential prime" 2009-12-17
By Darius Zdanauskas (London)
If you bought your first DSLR, you probably have a kit zoom lense or two, which is very convenient - at first. However, soon it actually becomes a limitation due to really tiny apertures even at the short end. This 50mm lense has the aperture of 1.4, which means more light, more flexibility, better bokeh and more. Stop it down to 1.8 and it's already quite sharp. At 2.8 it's super sharp.

In other words, it's a perfect portrait and general photography lense. You can do anything with it. Buy it. Or 50mm 1.8, if you don't have enough money, but you'll lose some sharpness and solid body (50mm 1.8 is plastic).

"Every Nikon SLR owner should have this lens" 2009-09-23
By Alison (Derbyshire, UK)
This is a wonderful lens which is great value for money. This is a great lens if you are making your first foray into prime lenses as it's such a good all rounder. If you are wondering whether to go for the 1.8 version of this lens and are not sure if the 1.4 is worth the extra - yes it is worth the extra! The gorgeous shallow depth of field, sharpness and great performance in low light make this lens a must. I am a professional wedding and portrait photographer and this lens is great for low light conditions, shallow dof shots of details and portraits.

 "Fast Nikon Prime" 2009-04-06
By No worries (Sunbury)
I bought this lens to complement a Nikon 18-200 f3.5 to 5.6 zoom. It was not a cheap addition to my D80 kit but I had some help from a retirement collection! It is great to have an f1.4 for low light portrait work, or to use as a compact general lens. At the camera's choice of f2.8, when using portrait mode, it gives good depth of field control to blur the background nicely while giving very sharp primary images. It is small, light and less conspicuous compared with it's larger sibling. One just has to get used to moving about a bit to fill the viewfinder to best effect. I love it!

5 out of 5 for value for money.

Even if it is made in China, and the new AF-S G lens, as well as 35/1.8 and 50/1.8 creates a competitive environment, on FX it is still very, very good.

 "Superb wee lense" 2008-12-28
By Ferny4 (Uppermill, UK)
What a wee gem of a lense. It gives fast, sharp pictures even in very low light (room with just glow from TV in background). For the money and speed I would recommend this lense (above that of the f1.8D) as I generally want to have the best lense to do the job (otherwise knowing myself, I will be nagged with the thought that the f1.4 would have been netter). I know it is good, very good. I hope this helps

By Mr. P. J. Holbrook (Northern Ireland)
Sony SAL-50F18 SAM 50mm F1.8 Portrait LensVery happy with this lens, exactly what I expected after reading reviews and performance charts and samples. Well worth every penny and while the bokeh is a little wild at 1.8 aperture it is easy to go to 2.8+ to tone it down a little if needed. Portraits are just great and some very interesting (nearly) macro is possible with this lens. Buy one.

"Amazing pictures for the price" 2010-04-12
By T. Crinson (Suffolk, England)
I just bought this lens for a friends wedding to take some nice portrait shots. It was a bit of an impulse buy as I bought it the day before the wedding so had no time to practice with it, and as this was my first prime lens I didn't want to splash out too much. Wow. I am so glad I got this lens. The pictures turned out beautifully. The f/1.8 worked brilliantly in the low light conditions at the reception and it remained very fast so there was no motion blur in the portraits; nor in the smoke from the cigars they were smoking!

Some of the other reviews have said about there being too much "Bokeh" ( the nice blur of the photograph out of the main area of focus ) and I disagree, I think there is a pleasing level of it and it makes for some lovely effects, but this is subjective.

I do agree with another reviewer about it feeling plasticky, but it doesn't feel flimsy, but I wouldn't treat it any less carefully than any other lens because of it.

Since purchasing this lens it hasn't been off the camera and I think I will have a great time learning the ins and outs of prime lens photography.

For reference it's fitted to my Sony Alpha 300.

"A must have for any DSLR user" 2010-03-29
By Mr. G. Manning (London, UK)
I've had mine 4 months now and have taken the best pictures ever with this lens. The depth of field / blur you can create is great and it allows you to shoot in lower light than the kit lens (assuming yours starts at f3.5 like mine). Since using it I've moved away from opening it right up at f1.8 (as others have mentioned) because it can be a bit soft but some of the pictures I've taken have got great praise in online forums and my Flickr pages. I think every photographer needs a 50mm prime in their case. If I had the money, maybe I may have bought the f1.4 but I don't think you really need to. The auto-focus seems fast enough, not noticed it being noisy and because it's smaller than a zoom, you can get away with taking pictures in public without sticking out like a sore thumb. I haven't noticed that the build quality feels cheap - just like any of your kit, be careful with it and it will last. I've only taken it off the camera twice this year and put it back on within 10 minutes because it's so much better than my kit lens. Only problem is, once you try a faster lens, you'll want to spend even more on a large aperture zoom and that could hurt your wallet !

"Good cheap fast lens for indoors and portraits" 2010-03-16
By M. Bhangal (Somewhere in Northern England)
I own two lenses (apart from the kit lens that comes with the Sony Alpha 200) - the Sony SAL18250 (18-250 zoom) and this lens.

Between then, I get the best of all worlds - a good outdoor walk-around lens (the 18-250), and a nice portrait/indoor/low light lens (the SAL50F18).

The only downside of this lens (SAL50F18) is that it is a different diameter from most other lenses (including most Sony kit lenses), so if you have any filters, you will either have to buy an adapter ring or invest in another filter.

Does look a bit cheap/plasticy, but all lower price Sony lenses look this way. A good addition to your kit lenses.

 "Nifty Fifty!" 2010-05-24

I originally only had the standard kit lens for my Canon 350d, but after reading lots of reviews i decided on the wee nifty fifty. Honestly, best buy for my camera yet. If you are quite new and don't have lots of lenses this is a great wee starter to get your passion back!

It's very light, so when its on the camera its great for slinging into your bag :-)

It's a bit strange getting used to the fact that you can't zoom mind you, but it does make you a bit more mobile ha.

The focus takes a bit of getting used to as well, I personally have found that I prefer it on manual focus. For me, the autofocus hasn't always zeroed in on what I want, but for me these are such minor issues I wouldn't even consider them negatives.

and the 1.8..man, it's just beautiful :-)

If you want your woman (women ;) ) to love you, you must have this lens. :)

"Old fashioned quality at a bargain price" 2008-07-11
By Mikalis Paparazzi (Cumbria, UK)
So much has been said about this great little lens that it's hard to add something new. Quality is far and above what you'd expect for the price, and it's so light you hardly notice in in the bag.

Build quality is strictly amateur, but don't be fooled, this lens delivers and unless you treat it badly it will reward you for years.

Going back to a fixed lens after the comfort of a zoom may seem strange at first but it takes me back to m old SLR days, when you simply walked back to fit more it. It makes you concentrate more on your framing and will make you a better photographer. The more shots you take, the more you'll want to use this lens, especially when you see the results.

If you're used to the plastic kit lens, the quality will blow you away. If you're used to L series, then it's worth buying for the heck of it.

Have to agree with the vast majority.

"Great first lens or complement to the kit lens" 2007-03-30
By James H. Ettle
I bought this lens after reading positive reviews of it here and elsewhere and seeing sample shots. I'd just acquired a Canon EOS 400D with the 18-55mm EF-S kit lens, which is by no means a bad lens but I wanted something a bit sharper, with a wider range of depth-of-field, and to try working with a fixed-length lens.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens did not disappoint. Optically, it's a little marvel: the images are clear and sharp, colour and contrast representation is excellent, and if there's any chromatic aberration with this lens, I certainly haven't noticed it. It's not a USM lens, so to manual focus you need to push the gear-switch on the side of the barrel. The manual focusing ring is right on business end and although ridged, tends to be a bit fiddly. However, wide-open, the depth-of-field is so shallow one really needs the autofocus, which is not silent but is as quick as it need be. In fact, I'm glad it's non-USM since this would only bump up the price; similarly with the construction, yes, it's made out of plastic but unless you're a routine and systematic lens abuser, how tough does it have to be?

All in all, given its optical quality, this little lens is fantastic value for money and a good buy for anyone who's just moved into the world of digital SLR.

"It's changed the way i look at things." 2010-05-17
By M. J. Gleaves (United Kingdom)
Having owned a Nikon D80 camera for a number of years now I was happy with the results of the kit zoom lens i got bundled with the camera. The picture was pretty good quality, fairly decent sharpness, slight darkening of the corners but fixable in photoshop, all seemed well. I must admit my photography was becoming a little stale, zooming in on this and that without any real composition, snapping happily away. All this has now changed with the purchase of this lens, it really has opened up a whole new world of possibilities to me (i know that sounds guff, but stick with me). Firstly, this lens is the sharpest i've ever seen, i can pretty much zoom right in using photoshop and still not see the edges of pixels, it really is that sharp. I really didn't think this possible with just the modest D80 but i'm really blown away. Textures taken quite close such as the bark of a tree, or the cracked underside of a boat look simply incredible, with great colour. It's depth of field is superb, with portraits having the lovely blurred (bokeh) effect behind the subject, whilst still maintaining pin sharp image quality on the subject. I could go on for ages about this lens, all you need to know is that it has changed the way i look at things, i have to now move closure to my subject if i want it larger in my picture making me think about composure a lot more (which is a good thing), and black and white pictures now have the detail they need. Please don't stick with your kit lens, i really shouldn't of for so long.
