veho vms-004 discovery series 400x usb microscope

In the legendary series of educational films from the 1970s, designers Charles and Ray Eames zoom out from a man resting in a park in downtown Chicago, transporting us in minutes to intergalactic space. At the point at which we reach the bounds of human knowledge, they stop... and zoom back in. Only this time, their camera doesn't stop... surveying deeper and deeper inside his skin, ultimately to the level of sub-atomic particles. Now, we're not suggesting for a second that this handy desktop 400 x magnification USB microscope will take you anywhere near sub-atomic resolution from the comfort of your own PC, but it will give you a darned good look at your skin, should you wish. Here at gadgetshop HQ we're huge admirers of Universal Serial Bus technology, as the legion of USB-compliant devices in these pages will attest. And this high-tech microscope, which offers resolution up to full 1.6M, is among the most inventive USB tool we have yet seen. With a host of pro-quality features, including variable magnification, widescreen imaging and a range of image capture options, all illuminated by 4 bright onboard LEDs, the sky (or rather, the world right in front of you) is the limit. Enabling awe-inspiring close-ups, and both still image 'snapshot' and full motion video capture, could there be a better way of passing a chill winter's evening than blowing up one's own hair follicle to the size of the Titanic? seemed like a really nice tv/dvd player at first - looks smart, nicer clear picture, no worries. After about 3 months however an intermittant fault started with the sound, it would just go silent for 10 - 15 mins and then come back. Within a week it had lost all sound - I phoned Toshiba helpline who declared it was a known fault with this model and told me to contact the retailer to arrange a replacement. Amazon were happy to give a full refund but as I was wary of buying exactly the same model again I bought a replacement elsewhere. I see Toshiba have vanished from the shelves of big retail stores such as John Lewis and Currys so perhaps they do have a fault in the system at present.

"Usual Pure quality (and price)" 2010-05-30
By P. J. Taylor (Wimborne, UK)
What a relief to find a clock radio with a good sound! After years tolerating my tinny old Panasonic clock radio I had the opportunity to buy a more expensive model with a few more features, and hopefully a decent set of stereo speakers. I also wanted FM as well as DAB, so this product from Pure seemed to fit the bill.

The Chronos Series II is fairly compact, but its boxy triangular profile allowed the inclusion of a pair of decent (for a clock radio) speakers which, with 10W RMS of amplification, give a very respectable sound. The tone can also be adjusted (bass & treble separately) to get it just right. The FM/DAB radio, which has 30 presets and is self tuning at switch on, is very clear despite radio reception in my area being poor. The CD player works well and is fairly quiet in operation. The controls are very clear and the setup menu system is very intuitive and easy to navigate. I particularly like the self-dimming display, which is very dim in a dark bedroom unlike my retina-burning Panasonic clock display! This model also comes with a very effective remote control.

Summary: A well made bit of kit with easy-to-use controls/remote control, and a great sound. Just a bit pricey...

"Fundamentally flawed as a bedside unit" 2010-05-21
By Steve Knight (Cheltenham)
I purchased this to fulfil the following criterea. A bedside unit that played music from my iphone 3gs, a DAB and FM radio and an alarm that I could use to wake up to a choice of those inputs. The main and for me, deal breaking problem, is that the volume is digitally incremental and the minimum volume is FAR too loud for listening to at night. Added to this is the fact that the display is too bright on its lowest setting.

Another annoying problem is that, to get any of the buttons on the front to work, including pushing the main button, you have to push hard enough for the unit to move away from you on each press of a button. Add to this the fact that the buttons are completely flush and black with no texture so they can't be seen in the dark and you end up with something that simply isn't practical for the purpose that its marketed for.

Good points, it works fine with the 3gs and receives calls, no annoying incompatibility warning messages and charges it of course. It sounds good for its size and its a perfect size for a bedside unit. Sadly, I've had to send it back to Amazon as not fit for purpose.

I'm now looking at the Sirocco pure 150, which is a hifi, so bigger than I wanted and not marketed as a bedside unit. I've tested it. It works fine with the 3gs, has a dab and fm radio, looks like it has a nice dim but clear clock and the volume will go down to zero with no discrete steps. In short, I think the chrono would be ok in other rooms such as a kitchen, although I still don't like the flush buttons that, because the unit is too light, means you push it away from you but it's a no from me for bedroom use.

 "DAB/CD clock radio" 2010-05-09
By M. Smith (Forest of Dean)
I bought this as a replacement for my Goodmans dab/cd clock radio that recently died after only a few years. I have choosen this one as it was smart looking and has all the requirements I need, with the added bonus of the mp3 connection.

The sound quality is really good, which you would expect from a dab radio and the cd and mp3 is easy to use.

The only down side I have found is the automatic dimming of the clock which I find quite difficult to see at night, and setting the alarm can be a bit fiddly.

Overall I find it to be an excellent product and would recommend it.

 "Pure Chronos CD DAB" 2010-05-02
By M. Waters (Suffolk United Kingdom)
Although it is advertised as more of a bedside radio alarm, I bought this as a kitchen radio. I'd seen it in John Lewis, so I knew what the quality was like, and the quirky shape was perfect to sit in a corner of the kitchen without taking up lots of work space. Amazon price was £15 better. It is advertised as having environmentally friendly minimal packaging, which is true, so shame on Amazon for delivering it in a box at least six times the size of the manufacturers packaging! Set up was easy, though the standard aerial wire was too short for our dodgy DAB area, and initially I could only get seven channels, with none of the BBC ones I wanted. I just extended it with another 6 feet of wire, and now get around 30 channels, including all the BBC ones. It ships with a very handy remote control, with a magnetic patch handy for sticking it to the fridge. Sound quality on DAB, FM and CD is excellent, as is the build quality. It is full of nice details, like the display backlight which automatically adjusts to ambient lighting level. Also has an energy star compliant power supply, so I don't feel too guilty about having it running all the time. It has an `aux' feature so you can plug an MP3 player into it, and again the sound quality is very good. Only very minor niggle is that it would have been nice to have included a lead to connect `aux' devices - A short male/male 3.5mm jack line would have cost pennies. Highly recommended.

 "compact kitchen system" 2010-04-27
By I. Craft (UK)
Very pleased with this. It has a superb sound for its size. Ideal for listening whilst at work in the kitchen, it also would be OK for more focussed listening elsewhere in the house. Tuning is easy. The range of options offered is impressive.

One minor quibble is that finding buttons on the front of the machine is a bit fiddly (but that might also be down to my clumsy fingers).

 "Excellent DAB Radio and i-pod dock/player." 2010-05-10
By Mark Hollingsworth (Bedfordshire UK)
This is a fantastic DAB radio and reasonably priced. I bought it for it's small footprint to go in my kitchen. It slots neatly in the corner and produces more than enough volume for a medium sized room. it was very easy to set up and tune which is great for those like me who can find these things challenging. I would highly recommend this neat little device.

"Seems to work just as it should" 2010-04-21
By M. Price (Middlesex, UK)
Easy to set up, time and radio stations all configure themselves as soon as you switch it on. Drop the iPod or iPhone into the dock and you can control the functions from the remote. One small niggle is that there are 4 or 5 adapters for different types of iPod, with very tiny embossed markings to distinguish one from the other, and you then have to look in the manual to find out which adapter suits your particular iPod. As we have bought this for our guest room, it would be helpful if there were a clearer and easier way of identifying the adapter that is needed.

 "Love it!" 2010-03-22
By A. Twiddy
I was weighing up between this and the Roberts Idream CRD42 DAB/FM Stereo Clock Radio with Dock for iPod. I initially bought the Roberts one - partly on price and partly on the footprint being smaller with the Roberts one (it goes on a bedside cabinet). The Roberts one, whilst easy to set up, had appalling reception on even the BBC channels and even worse on other ones. There is also no way of controlling the volume of the radio when it is set to come on as the alarm. I spoke to Roberts about both of these issues and they said that there was nothing that could be done to improve reception, and there was no way of altering the volume (which is VERY loud!). So sent that back and got the PURE one instead - fantastic! Everything is so flexible - you have 4 independent alarms which can be set as every day, just week days, just weekends or just one offs - can be set to radio (FM or DAB) or iPod or buzzer and the volume can be adjusted for any of them! The reception quality is superb - on all channels. Whilst it is a little large by the bed, I can forgive that because of everything else it does so well! The display auto dims really nicely at night - but is still clear enough to read if necessary - and is very clear during the day. I've also found that we are listening to much more music at night as the sleep function is so easy to drift off to. I cannot rate this item highly enough!

If you have used other Pure products, you may be slightly dissapointed at the build and sound quality of the Chronos. My advice would be to audition one before you buy.
