 "Absolutely Brilliant!" 2009-08-18
By J. Rhodes
this is a great tv set. i have owned it for 8 months now so i have used it enough to give a fair and thorough review.

1. Picture. the picture is very, very good! it has 1080p input for the ps3, 360, bluray and upscaling dvd etc. and it also supports 24fps on bluray which is good. the contrast is very good and looks breathtaking on the opening scene of the dark knight on bluray (you'll know the scene im on about when you see it ;]). the motion engine on this tv also works surprisingly well i haven't seen any motionblur yet apart from when i player fifa 08 (this happens on all of the HD TV's i have seen)

2. Sound. like another reviewer said the sound is top notch. it has virtual surround sound and lots of ps3 games, blurays, dvds and xbox 360 games are output in virtual dolby surround sound. it is so good it has actually made me hold out for another year before buying a 5.1 cinema system!

3. Connections. this tv has alot of very useful inputs. it has 4 HDMI ports, a component input (supports 1080p), s-video input, 2 scarts, USB, composite. the only inputs i use are HDMI and component. they both give a top quality picture in 1080p input (HDMI is slightly better). and the HDMI gives virtual dolby surround sound, component gives digital stereo which is pretty good. this tv also has a SPDIF coaxial output, and the standard L+R stereo output. 2 bad things about the connections are no VGA for easy connection to a laptop or pc (HDMI is better anyway but my laptop doesn't have it) and a SPDIF optical output would be better because it supported by way more amps and cinema systems.

the tv looks very attractive and the picture is as good as my uncle's 50" panasonic 1080p plasma (new TV but not sure which model) but this tv's sound is better. this philips is only just beaten by my grandfather's sony bravia 40" w5500 on picture quality (mainly because of the sony's motionflow) but it beats his tv for sound. that is a fair opinion by 4 people's comments not just mine.

All in all this TV is very good. my main uses are 360, ps3, bluray, and upscaled dvd. these 4 features all work absolutely brilliantly. freeview isnt available in my area so i cant comment on that. the only little niggles i have are - no VGA (PC input is supported through HDMI though), coaxial instead of optical (optical is more widespread). and i don't think it supports philips easylink. this is just like bravia sync where you can control all of your HDMI devices with just 1 remote. like i said though all in all a great TV and i am very glad i picked this over the sony 32v4000!

People should buy more Philips TV's in my opinion. This is a brilliant tele and when watching HD transmissions, the picture is simply unbeatable. Great with an upscaling DVD player (only a complete nerd would be able to distinquish between other TV's), and gaming through a 360 is stunning. Go get one!

 "Superb set" 2009-04-19
By J. A. Barker (Cumbria)
Admittedly, I don't buy a different tv every month. However, even without lots of comparisons to go by, I find this Philips set quite superb: the design is excellent; the connectivity is very good; the sharpness and clarity of the picture is magnificent; the sound (I have to disagree with reviewers who found it poor) first rate. I was debating a purchase of either this Philips or a similarly priced Panasonic. I'm sure the Panasonic is also top notch, but I have no regrets whatever about my choice. If you are wobbling between this set and another, have no fear of choosing the Philips.

This does the job although the sound is quite tinny. However, the light it gives off at night is incredibly bright even on the dimmest setting and therefore we have to face it downwards which kind of defeats the object as we can't then see the time. Easy to use and looks good though.

 "I like it" 2010-06-15
By Uchechukwu Nze
The product is really good. Am not too sure about the volume. It doesn't sound really loud which is ok for bedroom use. I was suprised at how small it was. But it serves the purpose for which it was purchased. However the delivery company HNDL was awful!! It took forever to get the product and eventually i just reordered another one. I also find that when I switch it off from the mains it defaults to cd even if DAB was the last function. This may just be to do with me but that's what i've noticed. On the whole a nice product.

 "DAB HI-FI" 2009-10-01
By Mrs. P. J. Wallace (Scotland)
I purchased this DAB Hi-Fi system as a replacement for my existing Hi-Fi which had broken, I checked a few reviews and decided that this system would suit me, the price was good and the item was available for immediate delivery. I have been pleased with the sound quality of the DAB radio, but I cannot comment on the CD player as I have not tried it yet, I'm sure that anyone who decides to purchase this item will be pleased with it.

 "Very Good DAB quality" 2009-09-18
By D. Leitao (Surrey, UK)
The radio works perfectly. The peice looks quite good. Volume doesnt go too high so maybe not that great if you are into loud music. its meant to be used a small or medium sized room and will do good. The blue display light might be a bit annoying in the dark if but you can put a cloth over it. Searching for channels, etc is a breeze and the remote has more than enough functions.

Overall a very good DAB radio buy.

 "Waste of money" 2010-06-21
By Mrs. S. Mckenna-badham (UK)
I agree with the other review that this radio alarm is rubbish. A complete waste of money and if I hadn't thrown out the box I would have returned it. Far too complicated and the off button is so well hidden as to be almost non existent!

One annoying deficiency not mentioned by earlier reviewers is that the radio reverts to a default volume every time it is switched off.

 "not bad really" 2009-12-30
By James S. Teppin (England)
it seems some ther reveiwers are not happy with this radio. fair enough. i quite like it though! i do agree that the screen is a little bright (but so was my last clock, so i angle it away from my eye line), but that's about it. the controls are a little fiddly, but like any other product you soon learn the layout, in my case in the dark and robert's ya father's brother! as to the ipod link, it depends what you're after. i have a dock for when i fancy a blast, but my wife i and only want a clock radio to provide gentle back ground music (steady!) to be able to drift off to sleep too, so it doesn't need to be loud. plus the built in jack plug is simple to connect to your ipod/mp3 player, it doesn't charge, but i don't want it to because my ipod classic has a long battery life and i don't want to fry it with constant charging. the radio seems to work brilliantly, the reception is great and it tuned itself and set the time instantly (you can select 12h too). Great for following the cricket and getting stations like nme etc.

if you want an all singing, all dancing dock to blast music, go and buy one. if you want a nice, simple and very compact dab clock radio, that's good value for money, buy this bad boy!

 "RUBBISH PRODUCT" 2009-10-07
By M. Nikiel
there are two very bad things about this radio.

first one is that the display has only two brightness settings so it is too bright at night even at the lower setting. It only looks ok in daylight, also the clock is only half the size of display and it does not show date. LCD backlit displays are simply not good for clock radios.should be LED.

Second thing, the sleep timer is equipped with a a drift off function which can not be turned off so the sound keeps fading away gradually.. I find it quite annoying.

It has an mp3 input jack to connect external player and play music on its built in 1 watt mono speaker.. what is the point !!??.

You can not use it to connect to hi fi.

The menu is complicated and not intuitive.

The only good things i can say about this radio are.. build quality is good and the radio reception is excellent for both fm and dab.

Philips AJB4500/05 Clock Radio - White

This is a very rubbish product. First its hard to find the right controls. The radio is white, the controls are white, and have the icon for their function engraved into top - in white. So they are invisible unless you get the light at the right angle - hard to do first thing in the morning. There are also too many of them and they are very unintuitive.

The main thing, however, is that mine stopped working within five weeks. The display went crazy and the radio didn't work any more. Overall this is cheap tat that lets down the Philips name very badly indeed.

 "dab radio" 2010-05-05
By Ms. S. Baker
This is a really good DAB radio for portable usage.

It came with mains adapter and takes 6 AA Batteries for portable usage.

I would reccomend buying some rechargable batteries if you do not use mains adapter.

Sound is crystal clear.

If you work on building site wouldn't reccommend as it wouldn't be loud enough, but good enough for the kitchen.

Do take in to consideration this is a portable DAB Radio.

I listen too radio 5 live and it is crystal clear.

 "DAB or radio?" 2009-10-27
By Mr. Sean Duffy (Dublin, Irl.)
I purchased this radio recently -but not through Amazon.

Some problems encountered so far are:

-Mounting stability -radio needs the lower extension pulled out to rest normally on a flat surface.

-Low Battery life -pretty poor under normal usage.

-No stereo sound through main speaker (if it was stereo battery life would be even poorer).sounds asymetrical!

-Volume controls awkward to operate. When you handle the radio, likely to hit one or other of the volume controls.

-The location & toggle type of ON/OFF button can easily be accidentally hit, especiallly for older people, turning off the radio.

-Long Time lag when when radio initially turned on..to tune into DAB station.

-Sometimes a DAB station can go out of tune for no reason (sound is garbled & breaks up) which is annoying.

Other than that, it's not a bad sound really & DAB is crystal clear. However the battery consumpion problem may prove to be the ultimate reason why I'm intending to return this unit.

Overall there are some design issues with this radio, which are annoying at best.

Nice compact size, but the stereo sound only comes through the ear phones, otherwise the mono sound is one sided to the right, strange, for this I didn't keep it.Shame.
