"Yes it is VERY bright" 2010-05-05
By A. Redfern (West Yorkshire)
Good quality finish and sound. Great analogue clock, though (as expected) it is quite large. More features than I'm likely to need. Easy to set up, though a little bit fiddly, e.g. if you want to cancel the alarm before it goes off so as not to wake your partner. Per other reviews it is very bright even on it's one dimmed setting, doesn't overly bother me but I don't understand why they didn't design it with a very dim setting - this could still be seen easily at night and in the day the analogue clock is so large you don't need any light. A shame, as it is too bright for my wife's taste it will get demoted to the spare room.

Due to the relatively high price for an alarm I was not sure whether to buy this item - so glad I did. The sound quality is good and I find it easy to use especially as the instruction booklet seems to make sense.

 "Nearly excellent" 2009-12-03
By P. Law (UK)
Good features as already documented by other reviewers, must disagree with the 'buzzer not loud enough' It starts quietly and builds to a max volume set by a concealed knob to quite acceptable level for me and also changes tonal pattern every 20 secs or so to keep you alert.

My main criticism is it has no non-volatile memory therefore a power cut looses all your saved stations and alarms - annoying. Why not use the SD card to store settings Mr Roberts if you must penny pinch on no internal flash memory.

The SD card playback only 'sees' files in the root folder so all your files are bundled together with no chance of putting them into separate album folders.

And finally the most annoying feature is toggling through DAB-FM-SD-Aux functions the SD option always hangs for 4 to 5 secs each time as it scans the SD card which is frustrating as you then over press and the loop overshoots what you want then it hangs again next time around.

All the above niggles could be sorted by firmware changes please consider Mr Roberts it would make your good product GREAT.

 "Impressive Machine But..." 2009-11-02
By C. Yeadon (Redditch)
The basic function of this item is a clock radio/alarm so I was very disappointed to find that it doesn't have an alarm skip facility. This means that if you have a day off & want a lie in you have two options a) Wait for the alarm to go off & cancel it or b)The previous evening go through alarm settings which is four or five key presses to turn the alarm off. Then the next day you have to remember to do it all again to turn it back on. I did Email Roberts but just got the reply "It is unfortunate but our products do not have the skip function you require" so in that respect it is not a very user friendly item.

However I was impressed with it's other features which have been documented previously.

For a clock radio the sound is quite good.

I live in a poor reception area but still managed to tune into about 20 DAB stations with a full signal strength.

"Good Radio but Not for me" 2009-06-24
By Cod (UK)
I have been unsure about how to rate this item as some of the "faults" are subjective. I have been looking for a DAB Radio Alarm Clock as I like Radio 7, my personal requirements are 1. at least two Alarms one with a very loud buzzer/Bleeper - I tend to be half awake through the first alarm and then get up quickly when the buzzer goes off.

This Clock has many excellent functions but the buzzer is not even as loud as a quiet mobile phone, therefore as it would never have woken me up. I therefore had to return it. I will point out that the Clock does have a lot of alarm functions if you are Ok without a buzzer.

2. I always set my alarm clock 10 minutes fast - this is to scare myself into jumping out of bed when the bleeper goes. This was not possible with this DAB radio and I have a nasty feeling that it is true with all DAB radio Alarm Clocks because they cleverly keep perfect time. If anyone could confirm this I would be grateful

Lastly a minor point -I was also looking forward to the pretty blue light in the picture but in the "flesh" the light was a sort of dull grey - disappointing. (By the way you can now dim the light if it too bright as mentioned in earlier reviews).

I found it a little difficult at first to set the alarm but re- read the instructions and got it the 2nd time. It was also larger then I had expected.

I did not get as far as checking out recording facilities

Overall I think this is probably a very good system. However if you need a loud buzzer, like to keep the clock fast and have a penchant for pretty blue lights you may not find it your ideal system

Otherwise it looks great.

I have given 3 stars - because an alarm clock should be loud enough to wake you up and because I felt that the picture was misleading.

"Roberts CRD37 vs PURE Chronos II CD" 2010-04-19
By N. Down (Sussex, UK.)
Initially purchased the PURE Chronos CD II as I wanted a Radio Alarm clock that would do everything. I already have a PURE DAB radio so I knew that the pedigree was pretty good. Unfortunately when I got the unit home I discovered that PURE had cut back on quality on the CD. The DAB and alarm funtionality was great but I also wanted the CD to play MP3's and at a low level. The previous version of the Chronos CD did play MP3 encoded CD's but not this one despite several websites saying to the contrary. I had to phone PURE support to check and they said it was a cost/licensing issue not to support MP3 CD's???? Aside from this the CD is unlistenable to a very low volume levels because the CD mechanism itself is just so noisy, with a constant whirring hum and a regular click. In the end I took the unit back and swopped it for the Roberts CRD37 and this was possibly the best move I have made. Apart from the small, hard to see buttons and the strange font on the display this Roberts outclasses the PURE in every department. YES, even in the radio area with a half size aerial. The CD mechanism is now silent and the sound quality is excellent (for a small radio alarm clock) even without any tone controls. To anyone who is in the market for a DAB, CD Alarm clock that plays CD MP3's then I recommend this higher than the PURE.

PURE have now released a mini Hifi which also funtions as a radio alarm clock and supports MP3 CD's, but this is a 3 box solution, not great for a small bedside table.

"Ouch! Too much money for a fiddly challenge" 2010-03-08

Wish I had not bought this. Controls miniature and hard to track, sound quality poor for money, hard work all in all, about to ditch it and buy Sony or similar as this turned out to be pretty useless

 "Not that easy" 2010-02-22
By K. A. Topley
Not for someone who needs an instruction book to know what they are doing. The instruction book appears simple but the radio does not appear to do what it says it should be doing when trying to set it up, i.e the alarm. Have not found out yet how to switch alarm off for just a day when it is not needed. The radio on f.m is not very good at all, perhaps because the ariel is not long enough. This is still though, a good radio/cd/alarm for the price, the cd player and dab radio are very good and easy to use.

 "not too impressed" 2010-01-15
By rengle8 (Kent UK)
There's no doubt this is a well-made DAB/FM radio/cd player and it looks good. Only thing is, as other reviews mention ... it has a pathetic piece of (cheap)wire for an "aerial" which is pretty ineffective. Actually it's useless. As a result, the radio is not able to receive ANY DAB stations here! The manual suggests moving the unit to another location, which isn't too helpful as in reality this means up in the loft and it's very cold up there at the moment. And not too convenient either when I actually wanted to enjoy the thing in the lounge! It will pull in a few FM stations - but only those with a very strong signal (e.g. Radio 2). By the way I'm talking London area - not Uzbekhistan! It won't receive LBC (on DAB or FM!)for example. By comparison I can get LBC on my car FM radio when 40+ miles from Central London! And another DAB radio at home[Pure Evoke with 68cm metal retractable aerial]works fine.

The CD player works well and the speakers are good for their size, producing acceptable sound. Bass and treble controls would improve the overall experience.

So, unless you live next to (or up!) a radio transmitter or want to install an external radio aerial on the roof (and modify the Roberts to accept the feed!), I'd avoid the Roberts CRD-37 and go for something with a more effective/sensitive/powerful receiver and a proper aerial. Seriously considered sending this one back - but may give it to my daughter and see if she gets better reception (or rather see if it'll work as a DAB radio receiver) where she lives.

 "Great little box" 2009-11-30
By Jon W
My wife wanted a DAB radio for her birthday (mad keen on sports news)plus it had to have FM (local news) plus she listens to reading book CD's every night plus she plays Mp3 CD's - the side of her bed was cluttered to achieve this.

After many hours trawling the net I came across the Roberts Sound 37 - it looked perfect - I was a bit concerned about the comments by others of the DAB reception and its 'cheap looks' but decided to 'go for it'!

Very good DAB and FM reception, CD bookmark is great - sound is good ( bass/treble control would have been good though)- once you know what all the buttons do its great.
