 "sony dab" 2010-04-28

Sony XDR-M1 Portable DAB/FM Digital Radio

This always was a great piece of kit. Since the digital switch over though the signal problems have almost gone! I couldn't get a signal in the house before and now i get a full signal. As long as i stay within built up areas and don't venture into the countryside too far it stays that way too. The only fault is the battery life, which isn't long but you should get a 8-10 hours from a decent pair of rechargable batteries ( i use 2000ah). So an overnight or quick charge and its all ready again. As for the lack of case, a cheap mobile sock does the job well enough.

A pricey, but great investment.

"great DAB radio - all the stations on the move" 2009-12-04
By Jake A. Holdridge (UK)
When Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) radio tuners first went on sale in the UK, they were limited to high-end expensive hi-fi separates. Now there's a whole range of products from a number of manufacturers and it's no surprise that recently sales of digital DAB radios overtook those of analogue in the UK.

Some such as BBC Radio 3 use 192Kbps but most use 160 or 128Kbps. This squeezing of bandwidth is done so broadcasters can give you more stations, many of which are broadcast exclusively on digital, though if asked, most people would probably choose higher quality. What is essentially true though is that with a clear signal DAB is superior to most analogue radios, delivering better sound and more stations.

The Sony has an immediate advantage in that it's the smallest pocket DAB tuner yet released. It's only 88mm high but a fairly chunky 21mm thick, and while we're at it, 60mm wide, which makes it feel nice and snug in the hand. It's also fairly lightweight at 119g. This is as good as it gets.

The Sony is doubly attractive as it offers a good `ol FM Tuner as well as DAB, ensuring that it doesn't turn into a Sony badged paperweight in those areas where you can't get DAB. This means that you can take it overseas to Europe, where DAB coverage is even patchier than it is in the US, where inevitably they have a completely different and incompatible version of digital radio. Furthermore the XDR-M1 can receive DAB signals broadcast on Band L as well as Band III. The latter is used in the UK and most European countries that broadcast DAB, but Band L is used by some German stations and in a typically idiosyncratic manner, exclusively in France.

 "I've had about 4 portable dabs since 2003" 2009-03-22
By Sam (York UK)
I've had about 4 portable dabs since 2003. The first actually had an aerial, the second and third were the ministry of sound dab (where both packed in and aren't durable). The third was the bush which lasted the pace for a long time, and I'd recommend

I foolishly bought this cheaply because it's sony. The only thing that makes it a sony is the superb sound quality. The temporary back light button I really like, as some dabs with the blue lit background annoy me. This is black, and the back light button is very good

The little remote control gadget for this is a waste of time. Like i say, I've had a few portable dabs, and the headphone wire is the aerial, which is why some reviews on here say the reception is awful. It isn't, it's just the remote control gadget sony have provided, is rubbish, which is a shame.

Like with other portable dabs I've had, if you get some headphones which have 1.5m cable, you'll be fine with this, but you'll have to give up on the remote gadget, unless you want to (if you do, you'll have over 2m of cable attaching normal headphones to it)

Establishing the above, I was still going to give this a 3 star review, because the sound is brilliant, and the signal is good once you realise what to do

But, like other reviews, this device doesn't remember what you've saved, which defeats the object of having presets, as it randomly remembers your settings when you turn it back on, but then the next day it will reset, meaning it has to scan, and the clock needs setting again (which I think I'll stop bothering to do after a while)

The conclusion to this, is this device works fine, so ignore the reviews about signal trouble on the move, but unless you have a lot of patience, all the negatives will aggravate you about this unit

I'm going to stick with it, as a scan is just half a minute when I turn it on, but overall, it feels like the developers of this just rushed it, and didn't road test it. It reminds me of a software release that needs fixes, but obviously, this isn't software, and fixes it needs are permanent faults

"Good but not without problems" 2009-02-08
By R. Homer
I have owned this unit for some years back when it cost over £100. Sound and reception for me are OK. There are a couple of places in my home where reception drops off but for me its not a big deal. Battery life is a problem. They only last a few hours and, now for the biggest problem, if the batteries are flat or there are none fitted the thing loses whatever is in the memory. When new/replacement batteries are fitted you have to scan all over again and any fav. stations have to be saved again. It is so frustrating. The radio stops without warning and if you don't fit new batteries straight away you have to re-save your favourites.

As for a case, I use an old mobile phone case,(S/E T610) works very well.

I would not buy this particular radio knowing what I know now if I was looking for a one now. It would be much better if it could be recharged.

 "DAB on the move" 2008-06-19
By Huggie (London, UK)
I don't normally write reviews but after looking at the most recent reviews of this product I had to give my very different experience of this product. I have had DAB radios for many years and this Sony DAB radio is the second portable one I have owned. The first was fine but did not have preset stations which was very annoying and is not a problem with this model. I find the reception is excellent. I live and work in central London and use the radio commuting on the bus and occasionally the train. It is very rare for me to lose reception on either mode of transport. I also ride a motorbike and listen whilst on the move and maintain reception whenever it is available. I therefore don't understand people who say it cannot be used on the move. As with all portable DAB radios I have tried it really struggles for reception in shops but works fine in the office and the home. Overall I think this is an excellent product and well worth the money.
