11.1x high zoom ratio lens designed exclusively for digital SLR cameras and incorporating Sigma??s original OS (Optical Stabiliser) function. Sigma??s unique OS (Optical Stabiliser) technology This lens is equipped with Sigma??s own OS function. This function uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera and works by moving an optical image stabilising lens group to effectively compensate for camera shake. It also automatically detects movement of the camera and compensates for camera shake when shooting moving subjects such as motor sports. Excellent Optical Performance A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and three aspherical glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations and produce a high level of optical performance throughout the entire zoom range. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. It also produces an optimum, neutral colour balance. Close-up photography This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 45cm (17.7?) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification of 1:5.3, making it very convenient for taking close-up pictures. Inner focusing system An inner focusing system provides high performance and convenience. The non-rotating lens barrel perfectly suits the matched petal-type lens hood (supplied) and circular polarising filters. Zoom lock switch mechanism A zoom lock switch mechanism is provided to prevent the lens from creeping due to its own weight.

 "Problems with the 350D" 2010-05-29
By E. Glen (Glasgow,UK)
If you have a 350D do not buy this lens, because you will have focussing problems. It seems to work fine with subsequent models, according to the other reviews. The Optical Stabiliser wouldn't function properly on the first lens that I bought. Focussing on its replacement was hit-and-miss, very frustrating. The retailer checked out my camera which was fine, and sent the lens to Sigma for a check - Sigma claimed that there was nothing wrong with it but, significantly, asked which Canon camera was being used. I had to sell it at a considerable loss.

The Photozone website uses a 350D for many of its assessments, and did not rate the quality of this lens very highly. Unfortunately, I hadn't read it until after I'd purchased it!

It weighs a tonne.

It's overpriced.

Performance is mediocre.

Very disappointed!

"A good all-round lens but remember the compromises" 2009-10-06
By R. Miller (Somerset, UK)
An internet search reveals various specialist reviews that'll either rate this lens as ahead of the equivalent camera manufacturers' lenses or slightly behind them in terms of quality. That's an ambivalence that points to pretty good glass and at a price which is significantly less than the camera brand-name - the product almost sells itself.

I've had this lens about 8 months now and it's probably on my Nikon D80 about 60% of the time. It's a great all-round lens and in my view its quality is easily as good as the first-generation equivalent Nikkor (I don't know about the latest Nikkor version). It's well built (maybe even a little heavy) and exudes quality. The internal motor is virtually silent and the optical stabilisation only makes itself known by the little clicks you hear as the gyroscopes kick in - and make no mistake about it, the stabilisation works! I was a little sceptical of its efficacy when I got the camera as it was so quiet, I wondered if I had a faulty model, however after a half-hour testing it at various focal lengths, apertures and shutter speeds and comparing the results with the OS switched on and off, it became readily apparent that it does significantly help at those longer focal lengths and/or longer exposures.

For all that, you have to bear in mind the compromises involved in building a lens with this range. It's like the proverbial "jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none". It does most things pretty well without being outstanding at anything. It can be a little soft wide open and it's not a fast lens (although the OS helps), and if you like soft, creamy bokeh this is not going to deliver.

Having said all that.........would I buy another? Definitely! It's a great all-rounder and has come into it's own when I've been on overseas trips where it's impractical or ill-advised to take anything more than the bare minimum of kit. It's a great walk-about lens too. Whack it on the camera and you've got a lens that will deal with the vast majority of photographic challenges.

"Superb multi function budget lens" 2009-08-24
By Don Pelayo (Asturias)
This is a Superb multi-function budget lens covering a wide focus range and incorporating a very useful optical stabiliser ( a must when using it towards the narrow end in low light or fast moving objects )

The proce is right for a starter lens ( those who buy only the body of D-SLR ) and better value for money than a kit lens.

The biuld is execellent and feels solid and well balanced , it takes a 72 mm filter.

 "Good walkabout lense" 2009-08-22
By Mr. L. D. Greenhow (UK)
After reading all the other reviews i went ahead and purchased this lens and Im not sorry. Bought it primarily for a family holiday to Disney so that I only had to take one lens and have just got the pictures back and they are great. But the lens is a little soft for the serious photographer. But an excellent travel lens it hasn't left my Nikon D40x since.
