Before you buy this microscope, be sure to look it up on the Celestron (not celestronton) website and save yourself a lot of aggravation. This is discontinued stock which means there is no support for it. I bought this to use on a Mac running OS 10.6. The online manual says ""Apple Mac 10.3 and newer users can download drivers and files from the celestron website." and this is confirmed in the manual that arrives with the microscope. When I went to the website, it told me the microscope was discontinued. I searched around the site and found some Mac drivers to download in the archive section and tried those to no avail. When I contacted Customer Services at Celestron they told me "We regret to inform you that at this time, we do not support Mac computers. We will pass on your e-mail to our product engineers for their review. The more comments like this we receive, the stronger a case for adding this functionality becomes. We may very well offer Mac support in the future."
I've tried to install this on Windows 7 through Bootcamp on my Mac but the installation failed.
There are much better alternatives to this microscope and I would strongly advise not to buy this one.

This product is easy to use with the low magnification but there are design issues with the x400. The focus wheel is not smooth which makes it difficult to focus at x400, the only easy way is to to move the camera towards or away from the object.
This would be a great product if the high magnification was reduced to x200, the focus mechanism made smoother (and also if the pixel resolution was 1024x768 or greater).

Most children's experiences with microscopes are rather bad. Toy shop microscopes are hard to operate and usually magnify too much. (And the optical quality is usually dreadful.)
In total contrast, this little gadget is extremely easy to use and shows a nice bright image on the computer screen. The 20x magnification is perfect for seeing detail in things that still look recognisable and the 400x shows more detail again. A great innovation. Don't even consider buying a "traditional" microscope till you've tried one of these.
What would make it better? In fact this is a microscope attached to a 640x480 pixel webcam - a higher resolution image sensor would be more appropriate. Otherwise the design is well thought out, the built in lighting is excellent and it could not be easier to use.
