This is perhaps the cheapest canon prime or zoom lens.
Value/performance this lens is more than excellent. f1.8 is very bright it helps you AF and shoot even at very low lightning. This is the one and biggest advantage. 1.8 is more than 1 stop brighter even by the most expensive L lenses. In terms of brightness this lens beats hands down even 1000$ lenses.
Even though it is quite soft @ 1.8 it is still usuable especially for portraits where absolute sharpness is not required.
Drawbacks of this lens are the motorAF system, which is slower and noisy compared to other lenses, the softness @ 1.8, and the clumsy focal range if you have a APS-C camera (1.6crop). If you have a full frame, then the focal range (50mm) are gorgeous.

bought this product, didn't even last 5 months, the front sheared off, was not dropped or anything. canon customer services totally useless, nothing is covered by their warranty, and one department doesn't know what the other one is doing, total nightmare and much much frustration.
takes nice pictures, but flimsy piece of equipment, so not worth the money. once something goes wrong, you can kiss your money goodbye. totally regret having bought it, and other canon products, as their customer service is just sooo atrocious. you'd think they run their shop out of a garage - well maybe they do...

When I recieved this in the post, the box it came in felt so light that I thought it must have been empty! Yes this lens is cheaply made and not very robust but the images one gets with it are great. At f1.8 and under £70, I would say this a perfect compromise to the more expensive £200+ f1.4. Great for anyone on a budget. I own some expensive glass but I a not ashamed of this cheap but cheerful little beauty. Also, it's quite good to work out whether you can actually get to grips with photographing up close or moving objects at it's very shallowest f-stop (1.8), rather than spend lots and find you can't even breathe whilst holding it.

Just arrived, very promptly, with good warranty. Just starting to use and am looking forward to the results matching the other reviews.

I bought this lens to replace the lens supplied with my brand new Canon EOS 400D camera kit. I use this lens as my standard one and have just put the supplied lens kit away in my camera bag( as an emergency replacement only).
Lens is very light and is very good quality built. Takes excellent pics and is value for money.I have recenly took some close up shots on holiday and the quality was fab. I paid £66 in June 2008. The best price i could find around at the time (believe me i did a lot of research on the internet and my Digital Photo mag.)
As a standard Canon lens you can't go far wrong!
I've also took some fab close up portrait shots with this lens. The quality was excellent. This lens is well worth the money. Supplied with a lens cover.
