"Stylish and nicely weighted radio" 2010-05-15
By Mr. David H. Rowlands (Bristol)
Sony XDRS10DABZ - Dark Wood Dab Radio & FM Radio

I am a bit of Sony freak and I bought the dark wood radio several months ago after having it on my wish list for a long time and trying to find a cheap one - not possible, so paid fair, full price for it through Amazon. I like the Sony brand and have TV, DVD/HDD freeview unit, car stereos, radios, camera, and many Walkmans/Discmans/MP3s over the years since I was a teenager (now 33!). The radio replaced an old quality FM Roberts (single speaker) of similar price, and I feel it beats the Roberts on sound quality.

Style:

I feel the dark wood looks more subtle and gives a higher quality look than the light wood option. The unit is very stylish with clean lines and simple buttons and display. Also a huge strong aerial, which you can move around using the usual hinged angled base.

Sound:

I noticed a couple of reviews regarding the stereo speakers. I believe that they do indeed enhance the sound, even if they are so close together. I think the point is that for broadcasts with multi (2) channel audio, even a small separation does make a difference. I think the sound is far superior to other radios listened to in shops including Pure, Roberts, and other Sony single speaker units. And note that this is without any form of equaliser or tone dials - Sony gets it right so that bass and treble levels don't need further adjustments.

I tend to listen to Radio 5 live (spoken) but occasionally Radio 1 or other music stations and both spoken word and music both have a nice sound with good depth and not tinny at all. It's in the kitchen with no soft furnishings so the sound isn't absorbed anywhere - and it sounds great (some radios will sound very tinny in this environment). I imagine in a lounge or bedroom with carpet/curtains etc, it will generate an even more lovely sound.

Functionality:

The auto scan is fine, and it usefully shows what the signal strength is for any radio station you are listening to. Surprisingly I had to move the radio in front of our kitchen window on the sill to get a strength of over 90 (out of 100 max) - it doesn't seem to pick up stations as well as our portable Roberts DAB. Anything under 80 seems to be terrible sound on DAB. Possibly due to lots of hard surfaces around the DAB radio, since the Roberts FM seemed to have been fine without the window location. I haven't tried the Sony DAB radio in other areas of the house but thankfully the window sill is good spot for the radio where it is convenient and looks good!

Price:

For this price (cira £70-£80) it is hard to find better for sound quality and style.

Recommendations:

The only recommendation I have is if Sony added a USB port for the plug in of other devices, eg. MP3. Some people demand this these days but I listen to radio more than MP3 so don't mind. It is something I have noted that Sony does often leave off a popular or useful piece of specification of an otherwise great piece of kit - I would have thought that adding such specification is not expensive nor difficult, just an odd omission.

Overall:

All in all, a great looking and sounding radio with a minor/major spec ommission for some, depending on what the user desires for his/her MP3 listening.

"This Does have an Alarm feature!!!!!!" 2010-03-27
By Craig Fryer (Middlesbrough, Cleveland, England)
guys, for those with this radio and think that it doesnt have an alarm you are wrong. i have complained to sony that there is one after they told me that there isnt. to activate it make sure the radio isnt playing and press 'Sleep' and 'Display' simutaniously, this will give you the option of 4 alarms. :)

"Excellent sound but a bit complicated for the Inlaws" 2010-02-05
By Mr. G. G. Davies (Newport Salop)
I bought this for my In-laws (86 and 87) and, as with all digital radios it is a bit hard to change stations. Why won't they do a simple push button tuner. However, the sound is excellent and it looks good in any room.

"Not easy to use !" 2010-01-07
By Pa Thompson (Leiden, TheNetherlands)
Looks good, sound is fine... but unless you have a LOT of time on your hands and much better instructions than are supplied don't even think of using the preset function. This radio made the 1,000 piece jigsaw look like a better option over Christmas

"Great DAB radio - cheaper in M&S" 2009-09-06
By J. Cross (Sunny London UK)
I did a lot of searching for best price on this radio. Just before I was going to order online, I popped into a large Marks and Spencer (with the wife on a supremely dull shopping trip) and to my surprise this was on sale for £48.90. Bargain! I love Amazon, but the price was too good to miss.

I'm a bit of a Sony snob and this has not disappointed.

Superb DAB, with good clear crisp sound. Good volume too. Presets are easy to set and being a man I set the whole thing up without the instructions in 2 minutes. Could have done it in 1 minute, with the instructions, but what fun would that be. Good FM radio. Could have done with a radio alarm option, but mine went in the kitchen and it is perfect.
