I purchased this portable DAB radio to see whether it could detect digital broadcasts in my area (St Johns, Worcester) which is known not to have good reception. It did pick up several stations but the interference was too high to make listening feasible.
I took the set away with me to the Fylde Coast, which was converted to digital broadcasting last year, and although it found stations again there was interference.
The set is adequate on VHF which I will retain as my choice for listening. DAB has not so far proved to be an improvement.
I do not think that the set is at fault, but I have no way of determining this.

Great Radio! I bought it today and, aside from the poor design choice by Pure to fit it with white speakers behind the black mesh (still not sure about that) the sound/tone is 'good' to 'very good' with all the usual Pure extras. If you want to use headphones, however, read on. The volume button moves in incremental clicks, rather than a seamless rotation. This would not be a problem but, in incremental clicks of the volume button you have; 1, Silent; 2, Silent; 3, Very quiet; 4, Comfortable listening; 5; Loud; 6 DEAFENING! ...and there are fourteen or more clicks! The jumps between incremental volume adjustments are vast at the lower range, and effectively you are only able to use three of the 14 or more stages of adjustment when using headphones. It might seem like a minor quibble, but it is an issue when trying to make subtle adjustments to address either background noise or quieter audio (particularly when listening to symphonic classical pieces). In my opinion, this is one of the best mid-range stereo DAB portables available, but seamless volume control would be a definite improvement on future models.

I am very pleased with this radio. I use it for listening to DAB mostly, and the reception and sound quality is excellent. I use it all around my house, garage and garden (in rural Aberdeenshire).
The feel and appearance of the radio oozes quality. To mee it looks much less retro than other makes - and i like that.
I like the styling, the sound is excellent, the inclusion of "mute" is very useful.
Best of all, I bought the rechargeable power pack with it - and I think it is brilliant.
I love the fact that it recharges while installed in the radio, as long as the radio is plugged into the mains. It recharges while the radio is playing as well as while it is switched off. So much more convenient than standard rechargebale battteries
I am not sure how many hours' play I should get from the pack - I have not bothered to read the manual yet- but so far I have been running for about 2.5 days 6-7 hours a day. I am very impressed.
This is my second PURE product, I bought the Highway In-Car DAB unit 12 months ago. I am very impressed with their products.
I would recommend this to anyone -and especially the rechargeable power pack.
Update May 2010. The power pack developed a fault. It would not recharge properly, and it was causing some strange radio behaviour. I actually thought the radio had a fault. I contacted PURE via the support function on their website, and they sent out a new chargepack same day, and the problems were cured. Impressive support.

I normally wouldn't shell out this much simply for a radio. However I was experiencing difficulties in FM reception due to the topography of where I live- in the shadow of a large hill. So I decided ot try DAB Radio as an alternative. I read various reviews of Pure radio products and finally opted for the Elan II. I wasn't disappointed -reception is first class no distortion or drift. Sound quality is crisp and clear - with base and treble adjustments this will suit all types of music from classical to heavy metal. Easy to setup and programme.
My only complaint is not with the radio but that here in Belfast there are only a limited number of stations that broadcast in DAB.
It may seem a little pricey but it's worth the extra outlay.

I'm very pleased with this radio. The quality of the materials seems to be very high, and it feels well made. It's also easy to use - I managed to get it set up and working in a few minutes, although you'll need to look at the user guide for some of the more esoteric functions. On both FM and DAB, tuning was very straightforward and the presets work very well too. Lastly the sound quality (with two speakers in this set) is excellent and enhances the pleasure of listening to serious or pop music as well the news or plays.
