A superb quality professional standard compound microscope at about a quarter of the price one would normally expect to pay. Without a doubt the best bargain I've had in years.

I bought this microscope on the strength of the other review here, and I have been very pleased with my purchase.
The microscope is simple and straightforward to assemble, and is a solid and well made piece of equipment. It has four 'objectives' ('objectives' are what I would once have called screw-in lenses - but now I know all the proper terms!) each of different magnifications, plus two different sets of eyepieces (also different magnifications), plus various other bits and pieces, the purposes of which I have yet to discover :-)
Because there are two eyepieces, the image is in 3D. There is also the ability to focus on different parts of the slide - the foreground and the background. The microscope comes with some (blank) slides, a smart wooden case for the microscope, and a plastic dust cover.
The microscope is illuminated by a tungsten bulb, which is bright but rather hot, so unfortunately I cooked the little critters in my first drop of pond water... I don't know how to avoid that really.
It was delivered incredibly quickly (next day) directly through Apex and beautifully packed with lots of packing material. They also rang me to make sure I would be in for delivery - now that's what I call good service!
I also bought the microscope slide kit The Apex Advanced Microscope Slide Kit which is excellent and gave me everything I needed to really get stuck into my new hobby (see my review of the slide kit for more details).
As a complete novice, I think this is an excellent microscope with everything that I need to get started. I'm having a lot of fun with it and I highly recommend it.

I decided to treat myself to a good optical 'scope that was within my price range - and this did the trick! Firstly, it was dispatched very quickly and the packaging was amazing! Polystyrene inside a wooden case. When I set it up and viewed the 'sample' slides/preparations that came with it, I could not believe the clarity of the image! I have used the immersion-oil on the 1000x plus magnification and it works great! I also bought a digital camera attachment with the help of the company; Apex Microscopes [who were most helpful, I would like to add]. From an engineering point-of -view, it is a work of art! All the controls are precision built and really smooth. I would highly recommend this 'scope or any other from Apex to the buyer. It is lab-quality available to the home-user! Cheers all!
