 "Average Consumer Lens" 2010-06-02
By Useless Article
Everyone seems to love this lens. A word of caution, it's a very average lens. Not to say it's bad, just average. At £298 I think new owners may feel disappointed. I use a 550D and this lens doesn't do justice to the 18MP sensor, but an L lens is three times the cost. It's 12 year old technology, so again adjust expectations. A compromise of cost and zoom.

The lens to compare this with, is the 18-55mm EFS Kit lens. The image quality is similar, at times the kit lens trumps. Really! The chromatic aberration is worse on the 28-135mm, so is the contrast. The 28-135mm is rather soft, with only the center being reasonably sharp. The Image Stabilization is better on the kit lens too. On the 28-135mm, the 'IS' is an older version, it performs less well. The IS is noisy in comparison and the image jumps slightly on focus, every time. Keep the lens at f8 minimum to keep reasonable sharpness. Use RAW so you can post-process the image.

The lens creep people talk about isn't that bad, but could be annoying to some. If kept at 28mm and generally level whilst walking around, it's fine. The lightness of the 550D means this lens will 'droop'. It could do with a lock, but I found on a similar consumer Sigma lens, it failed fairly quickly. Someone suggests a thick rubber band in between the manual focus and zoom rings. The kit lens is much lighter and innocuous. The 28-135mm stands out, it's not subtle.

The plus point over the kit lens? Well the construction is slightly better, but it rattles! Still, it has a metal mount. Manual focus is better and use of a polarizer is possible, as the front doesn't rotate on focusing. The USM is faster and smoother than the kit. If you turn off the noisy IS, the 28-135mm would be better for video (although the zoom mechanism isn't quiet, just quieter). You might miss the 18mm wide angle aspect, but if you want 135mm, then this lens solidly trumps the kit lens. It's the biggest reason to get this over the kit lens.

Also: Macro. The kit lens is 0.25m and the 28-135mm is 0.50m.

The kit lens is surprisingly good for a plastic tube. In comparison the 28-135mm is an unspectacular alternative. It's all about the 55-135mm extension.

"Canon EF 28-135 IS USM lens. A good general purpose zoom." 2010-02-01
By John W. Thompson (England)
I bought this lens as a general purpose 'walk round' zoom for both my film and digital SLR cameras. (Yes, some of us still use film!)

For my film camera it provides an excellent zoom range. For my crop-sensor DSLR the range becomes 45-216, ie limited for wide angle shots. Those needing wide angle for their crop-sensor DSLR would be better served by the (more expensive) EF-S 15-85 IS lens, equivalent to 28-135 in film terms.

The lens is a typical Canon mid-range product, of reasonable cost & weight and with decent build & optical performance. Auto focus is accurate & fairly fast, and IS is a 'must have' for me.

I purchased a 28 - 135 mm Canon lens. I wanted a lens that would cover most of the situations that I would use in wedding photography. I have used this lens with the filter and hood and I have been very pleased with the results and ease of use. Highly recommended
